I booked the Le Meridian after reading many reviews on Tripadvisor (TP) and elsewhere. Despite varying reviews I think there is enough information to understand what you are going to get between the good and the average reviews. This was a second visit to Malta in 3 months and I wanted stay near St Julians. Getting into the mini bus at the airport the drivers reaction at finding out we were going to the Meridian boded well. The welcome at reception late on a Sunday night was excellent, friendly and very helpful. Having booked a 'superior' room I made an enquiry so as to understand what that included. Having read a recommendation in a previous TP review to upgrade the room I decided to follow that advice and requested a room with a sea view. This was an extra 15 Euro a night and I can only re-iterate the earlier review and advise you to do the same. Our room was on the 10th floor with an outstanding balcony visage to the bay in front of the hotel. The room was very large and clean with a big bathroom and separate toilet. The bathroom had a corner bath much to the delight of my partner, and a cubicle shower. It included a simply massive bed, which we both thought perfect and we both slept well. There was a large flat screen tv, fridge, ironing board and a safety deposit box included in the price. Most safety boxes cost me around £20 so I considered that to be taken off the extra I paid as I always request one. I had already told reception that I didn't want anything from the fridge and was told that it would remain locked. I personally like the assurance of no mis understanding about what was used or not at check out and this suited me fine. We didn't hear a peep of noise at anytime and now feel cheated at not having my own turbo charged ice machines, and I wasn't bothered about carrying my bags as I have perfectly good arms (both other reviews). The lifts were quick and efficient so no complaints there either. The hotel was built about 4 years ago and everything was still well maintained. I don't understand other criticism of the hotel decor/fittings etc, we both thought it was to a very high standard. A first class breakfast room with an excellent choice of great food, and mostly very helpful and attentive staff. The bar, restaurant and lobby were very well appointed and in general it was a delight to be around here. Happy hour was around 6, buy one get one free. There is a Spa which we didn't use but looked reasonably priced. The bar staff were friendly efficient and insisted on bringing the drinks to our table despite my perfectly functioning legs. Although cheated of being allowed to convey me to the bar they were just great at getting me to St julians in 5 mins, and Silema in 10 mins. Perhaps we are unusual in that we like to walk and explore.
Those who find walking for more than a minute stressful will be delighted to learn that this much effort will get you to 2-3 bars and 4-5 restaurants outside the hotel. This amount of effort will also get you to a bus stop travelling in either direction and for a whole 2.60 Euro you get all day unlimited travel. St Julians is fantastic and I would heartily recommend staying here, although it does get populated by a large community of foreign students through the summer.
Fittingly the taxi driver taking us back to the airport had nothing but praise for the hotel, and felt this is because it is owned and run by Maltese people and staff. He treats his wife to stops there and said the Spa was really good. I haven't seen a standard room but from our experience of the place we will definately be returning to it, as a preferred guest. Negatives, I gave up on trying to get Wi Fi on my smart phone, and the w/end breakfast staff (who appeared East European) weren't so friendly or as efficient.
