We chose to stay at Dr. Holms for a family trip in December 2009.
We were met at the train station and driven the short distance to the hotel which was good because we had lots of luggage with us. The check in was efficient and friendly and we took the extremely slow elevator to our suite.
The suite was in the historic part of the hotel and was described as having an "English, romantic style". It turned out to be very dark, very worn and really not at all a place where we would like to spend more time than necessary. Old fashioned furniture, horrible curtains and almost no lamps. The wardrobe could not be used during most of the day because there was no lamp at all and it was very dark. There was at least two doors in the suite that did not lead to anywhere, just looked strange. Rebuilt but not properly. Bathroom very old fashioned. Beds very soft which is comfortable is you like this (like I do), but horrible if you do not (like my husband). There was a balcony outside the suite which was full of snow and old sigarettes that previous guests had been smoking outside.
The skiing was, however, very good. Recpetion took care of ski-passes and there is a good rental place for skiis connected to the hotel. After a short walk, we were in the slopes.
Apres ski at Dr. Holms is great, lots of fun and really the place to be. Very good service at bar. Be there early, however, if you would like so sit down. And be aware of the Norwegian prices for alcoholic drinks if you do not want to be shocked when you sign the bill. ;-)
Breakfast had a wide selection, but was still a huge disappointment. All "warm" dishes were completely cold. Cold bacon, cold sausages, cold baked beans etc. They run out of fried eggs all the time and you really had to be there when the new ones arrived to get one at all. Also the "new" eggs were cold. If there was a need to refill something at the buffet, the personnel would do this in between the guests helping themselves to the food. Pouring huge boxes of private label "cornflakes" into a big bowl at the buffet instead of bringing a new, full bowl for example. Still it was worse that some items were not refilled at all when empty. Someone was supposed to go around to pour coffee. They never found us. The juice machine gave only water, no juice. Some items, for example the home made youghurt with fruit compote, were really tasty, but the overall impression was just poor. Maybe it is high season and maybe we had breakfast at a very busy time, but this was just not acceptable.
Dinner was included, not possible to get just a room and breakfast at the time we were there. For the price it was a disappointment. Service at dinner time was, however, better than during breakfast.
SPA and pool area looked really nice. Not possible to get any SPA appointments - they were booked out a long time ago.
All in all we had a great time at Geilo, but this is thanks to Dr. Holms hotel.
