We stayed here for four nights on a trip to the Arctic to look for the Northern Lights. The hotel was great - very central to the town (which is no great shakes, it has to be said) wiht free internet access from a machine in the lobby. The hotel didnt' have fluffy white bathrobes and upmarket stuff in the en suite....what it did have was full board. In Norway, where everything is eye-wateringly expensive (Bill Bryson's joke, I admit) the provision of sliced chees,es cold meat, DIY waffles, home made soup, fantastic bread and lots of jams, pickles etc was wonderful. Breakfast was help yourself, then it was put out again at lunch then from 8 to 10 in the evening. This meant we actually had enough money to have a six pound pint in the nice little bar next door. And the hotel people were really helpful, phoning taxis, offering advice etc. And did we see the Northern Lights? Yes, thanks to the excellent advice from the lady in tourist information we hired a car from Rent-a-wreck (sounds awful but the man was helpful and reliable and the car was good condition and very reasonably priced), drove out along the E6 in the darkness, found a layby and watched the best display we have ever seen. We also took the car out to the Ice hotel - not to stay (what are we - made of money?) but to admire ...it was unexpectedly beautiful. All in all, a very good break, made better by the food at the Park Hotell.
