“Beautiful old manor house but town is not American friendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

The manor house and the grounds are beautiful, but upon arrival, the clerk informed me that the restaurant was closed. She was unable to direct us to ANY open restaurants on a Sunday evening. Louviers appeared to be almost completely shut down. We stopped at the only open brasserie and it was not serving food. Men were making negative comments about Americans....owner did try to direct us to another restaurant. Finally found a pizza place open (don't eat the pizza, it's horrible, but it was food). Felt dangerous and unfriendly to all of us. Restaurant not open next morning, clerk no where to be found for check-out.....pretty hotel but why is everything deserted?

“Awful, do not waste your precious time or money staying in this place”

We picked this as a 'last minute' one night stop in France on return from the south with little research. This was a big mistake.

The Chateau itself looks OK on arrival (we already knew it wasn't a grand chateau and was classified as an Auberge/Inn). However, when checking in we were greeted with a stereotypical example of surly French service (this was to continue as a bit of a theme).

Our room was large and appeared OK on first impressions, although on closer inspection we noticed the considerable signage around the room outlining the rules for staying. These included things like not eating or storing food in the room or having picnics in the grounds. A 12 Euro charge would be made if any towels were missing on the daily inventory (the towels were old and grey and to be honest it would be highly unlikely that anyone would be desperate enough to take one).

The bathroom was dated and lacked a proper shower (it was a hold it above your head yourself job), the toiletries were sparse and the bathroom just didn't feel very clean.

Due to the location being remote and the town not really offering much in the way of dining options we booked a table for 8pm. On arrival for a drink before dinner we had to ring at reception for a drinks menu and then again to order. When we went through to the dining room for dinner, we selected a table near the windows overlooking the grounds.

Whilst waiting for a menu, we glanced at the glasses and silverware on our table - it was filthy and we needed to clean the glasses ourselves to ensure the detritus was removed before we could drink from them.

The restaurant was far from busy, 1 solo diner, a group of 4 and us, yet it took 35 minutes for a menu to be produced and during this time no aperitif/drinks were offered.

After our selection was made, we waited for a further 25 minutes for our entrees - both of which were not very nice. As we waited for our main course (lamb for me and filet of beef for my husband) we heard the dulcet tones of a faraway microwave and lo and behold our meals were served a further 15 minutes later - to say these meals were poor would be an understatement, my lamb was cold on the outside and steaming hot inside a sure sign it had recently been nuked in the microwave, the accompanying vegetables were undistinguishable and were all an unappetising shade of grey/brown. Needless to say my husband and I didn't eat more than 2 mouthfuls of this revolting meal and beat a hasty retreat from the restaurant.

The only possible highlight of our stay was the grounds, these were good and we enjoyed the short walk around the garden.

“Dissapointing end of a wonderful trip”

This was our last hotel in a noce row of hotels during our trip through France. Despite the fact we selected this hotel based on experiences with the hotels and chateaux collection, this was a very disappointing experience. Not only was the hotel itself decayed, renovated a long time ago in a state nobody can understand (old mansion, "new"additions, a mish mash of styles, this was the first hotel we really didn't feel welcome. We didn't see much of the staff (it was a sunday night, so no food available), all we saw were warnings, rules and more dont's. A list, including prices per item, stating all inventory was checked every day, as if we really would like one of those towels. Maybe pretentious is the right word, they want to be something special, maybe even believe they are, but it's more of a backpackers place then a worthy manor.

“Ancient or modern”

I agree with the reviewer that this hotel is very tired. It desperately needs investment and a makeover. We were shown 2 bedrooms, one ancien and the other moderne. Unfortunately the moderne was ancien too! The bathroom door didn't fit, the curtain rail fell off but the bed was comfortable. The food in the restaurant was unexceptional. Did I complain? No. Should I have done? Yes. But we were there only one night and will not be returning. Of the 3 hotels that we stayed in en route to the Dordogne and back this hotel was a very poor 3rd and in comparison did not represent good value. Frankly I'd give this place a miss.

“Tired - needs a refurb”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2008

We stayed here on our way down to the Dordogne on the 5th July and were rather disappointed.
Firstly the location is great, a rural quiet setting and the main house has some character. Also, the food in the restaurant was very good and worth the cost (24 Euros).
When you book your room - do not go for the most expensive, thinking it will be luxurious as it won't. The cost is based on room size (ours could accommodate 4 people but there was only the two of us). Had we known this - we wouldn't have had it. It was a good size but....had not seen a lick of paint for about 20 years. The curtain rail was very flimsy and kept falling off. The bathroom was a dingy, mouldy, faded plasticky affair and highly unpleasant. The towels were grey and did not match.
The hotel was very quiet and on a Saturday evening in the restaurant, there was only one other group of people dining - despite obviously more guests staying in the hotel. Odd for a weekend in July.
Don't rush to stay here for any length of time - one night is about enough
