We stayed here for Christmas 2011 with our three kids aged 12, 9 and 4 and it was everything we had hoped it would be.
We were limited where we could stay as there are five of us, but we loved the fact that the kids had their own room with TV. We took a mattress off one of the beds in the main room and put it in with the bunk beds so that they were all in together.
We all loved the breakfast in the mornings and the fact that you could have as much as you wanted-the pushing and shoving that has been mentioned was something that we noticed everywhere, including the parks. We put it down to our polite British manners and soon got used to giving as good as we got and even resorted to refusing to move for late-comers to the parades!!
We had an all-you-can-eat dinner at the hotel on our last night and wished we had gone there sooner as it was such good value for money compared to the parks and Disney Village. There were oysters, king prawns, a number of mains and loads of puddings. The bar was expensive but no more so than anywhere else we went to and they had a 2-for-1 happy hour every night.
We used the pool on Christmas Day and were the only ones in it! It didn't bother us about having to pay for the towels as I wasn't prepared to pack five bulky towels from home. We had been aware of this before we left home but have to say we noticed room towels had been put in amongst the wet ones when we left the pool-why didn't we think of that?!
The shuttle buses were packed at times but only when you would expect them to be e.g at the end of a parade. It was never really a problem for us as they were so frequent. I don't think we ever waited more than five minutes for the next one.
The only gripe I would have is the noise coming from the disco area in the evenings. Our room overlooked it and the kids found it so hard to get off to sleep as it went on until midnight most nights but I suppose it was Christmas! I would ask for an outside room if we ever stayed there again. We also would have found the lack of UHT milk in our room a problem had I not packed sachets from home. There was only powdered milk available to have in your tea or coffee.
We would have found it too suffocating to have stayed in a Disney hotel as well as spending all day every day in the Disney parks so The Explorer's was ideal for us.
Room Tip: Outside rooms are quieter
