“A hotel or a place you don't have to lock your door!”

I was there to have my Christmas holiday which is so unforgettable. The hotel is a very simple one and not crowded as I believe it is not popular to travel there. The hotel is clean and it actually has what you expect in a small island. The only thing annoyed me here or actually in the island is the flies and Mosquitos, so please bring along spray with you. You can find everything close to this hotel with the biggest supermarket of the island just 3-min drive, if anyone who dive, the most famous Wet "n" Dry Adventure is just behind. The island is very safe, we actually didn't lock our room door and car doors throughout our stay. It is recommend to rent a car here as there is only 1 taxi driver in the island and you have to book beforehand.

Won a prize of 5 days at Sunset. Did not know what to expect from CI, only seeing media coverage of detention centre and boat tragedy etc. What a wonderful surprise this island is!! Sunset Lodge perfect. Charming staff, room serviced daily, very quiet. Tourism staff great (tours worth going on, 4WD hire a must). We were sad to leave after just a few days! CI isn't for everyone, it's no glamourous destination but we loved it. Thankyou.

“Astoundingly beautiful location”

Spent 5 nights at the Sunset hotel in an ocean view room (with private balcony) and enjoyed the most incredible dawns and sunsets enjoying the views over the sea and the breath taking peaks rising above flying fish cove. Great views of the navy / customs vessels patrolling the waters and of the sharp rocks of the coastline.

Rooms have all amenities - fridge, microwave, tv, aircon and coffee facilities. The hotel used to be a hospital, so the layout is odd and the "lobby" is just a tiny office. Across the track right on the coast is the "Captain's Last Resort", a self contained accommodation unit that was once the island morgue.

Arriving at night there were no staff on duty so one simply tried various unlocked doors until finding a note on a pillow with my name on it ! There is no catering and no food available so bring your own supplies. As a positive the mini bar soft drinks are very reasonbly priced at $2 a can (bearing in mind how expensive CI is - $8.00 for an iced coffee in a supermarket!); as a negative the little jug of milk provided in the mini bar was not replaced daily and turned quite rancid.

There is a decent pub/restaurant a short walk away - the Golden Bosun - which does pricey - but generally very nice - pub meals. The drinks here (as everywhere on the island) are tax free and the place can be packed to the rafters and a lively spot.

There are cheaper places to stay on Christmas Island but none offer such amazing views. Both guests and staff are casual and friendly so its very much laid back at the Sunset hotel. Evenings folks tend to sit about on balconies or communal areas enjoying cold drinks.

You will need a vehicle to get around the island and preferably a 4WD if you want to see most of the sights. There is a single taxi on the island available by phone but you will see very little without access to a car.

Groceries and eating out is expensive on Christmas Island so plan ahead.

Room Tip: Go for an ocean view room with a private balcony - they are the best !

“Brilliant location, clean and ideally-located”

The ocean view rooms at the Sunset Hotel were absolutely perfect for what we needed - a cool, clean place to come back to after exploring the rainforest/beaches! The pool was a great way to stay cool and the location is perfect. Highly recommended.

“Best location in the island”

This time is 2nd visit.

There is not the resort facility in this island, but the hotel is keeping very cleanly and Angy of the owner is very kindness.
It is very convenient to do for diving because there is close to Jetty.
Unfortunately there are a few restaurants in this island.
We purchased food and enjoyed the making of supper every day.
There is a hotel called VQ3 near, and there is a kitchen.

The view of setting sun from here is truly beautiful.
