Spent 5 nights at the Sunset hotel in an ocean view room (with private balcony) and enjoyed the most incredible dawns and sunsets enjoying the views over the sea and the breath taking peaks rising above flying fish cove. Great views of the navy / customs vessels patrolling the waters and of the sharp rocks of the coastline.
Rooms have all amenities - fridge, microwave, tv, aircon and coffee facilities. The hotel used to be a hospital, so the layout is odd and the "lobby" is just a tiny office. Across the track right on the coast is the "Captain's Last Resort", a self contained accommodation unit that was once the island morgue.
Arriving at night there were no staff on duty so one simply tried various unlocked doors until finding a note on a pillow with my name on it ! There is no catering and no food available so bring your own supplies. As a positive the mini bar soft drinks are very reasonbly priced at $2 a can (bearing in mind how expensive CI is - $8.00 for an iced coffee in a supermarket!); as a negative the little jug of milk provided in the mini bar was not replaced daily and turned quite rancid.
There is a decent pub/restaurant a short walk away - the Golden Bosun - which does pricey - but generally very nice - pub meals. The drinks here (as everywhere on the island) are tax free and the place can be packed to the rafters and a lively spot.
There are cheaper places to stay on Christmas Island but none offer such amazing views. Both guests and staff are casual and friendly so its very much laid back at the Sunset hotel. Evenings folks tend to sit about on balconies or communal areas enjoying cold drinks.
You will need a vehicle to get around the island and preferably a 4WD if you want to see most of the sights. There is a single taxi on the island available by phone but you will see very little without access to a car.
Groceries and eating out is expensive on Christmas Island so plan ahead.
Room Tip: Go for an ocean view room with a private balcony - they are the best !
