“First Return Since Shearings Take over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Having spent weekend 'Winter wonderland" s for a number of years, we had been put off returning since Derwentwater Hotel had been taken over by Shearing’s by the adverse reports on this site.
However since we had not managed to find a better hotel in other parts of the Lakes since, we decided to give it a try at the end of January 2012.
For the first time we have to feel let down by tripadvisor reports, how misleading. OK the menu is not as good, no soup course, the breakfast smaller, but the same high standard of rooms ( Although the restaurant decor is lacking ) the staff are professional and I am sure they have the same duo on the organ on the Saturday evening in the conservertory. If it was the old Derwentwater hotel it would be at least 50GBPs per night dearer, so for the money I could recommend all past holders of the loyalty card to give it another try.

Thoroughly enjoyed this older style hotel, in it's Lakeside setting, not far from Keswick. Very comfortable room, with very good facilities, and very helpful staff. Very good for walks around the area.

“THE DERWENTWATER DUMP”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Well we arrived at night and found access difficult, not well lit, and no use to a disabled pensioner, no wheelchair access, we booked the best rooms, and what we got were two dirty smelly kennels, i asked where are the lovely rooms that are shown and advertised on the internet, the receptionist said there are none, those on the internet are from another hotel, and used as an example i said that is misleading and false advertising and i told her we are not even unloading the car, we are going back home tonight, by this time it was 10pm, she said oh well goodnight not even an apology or nothing, so we drove back to scotland that very same night. The charge for our stay was £ 498,00 pounds we even had an additional charge of £36.00 to make sure of the best rooms, what we got was not worth £4.98, even arriving at night although we payed for dinner for three nights, all we got were dry rolls and crisps, just the job to heat up tired travellers on a cold january night.
We also had to find our own rooms, not even can we help or let me show you your rooms, NOTHING. There was dog pee in the reception area damp patches every where you looked, they try to mask it up with fabreeze or something, but i know dog pee when i smell it, in fact the whole hotel smelt awfull, i glanced into the lounge area, even that was not as advertised, there was a singer supposedly entertaining the customers which consisted or around six people, well he was singing my old mans a dustman for goodness sake this is 2012, not 1950
maybe thats why there was such a small audience.
All in all this is not a hotel i would recommend, unless your looking for somewhere for your dog to stay. STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS DUMP

I am sorry but I disagree with all elements of your review which is not only grossly inaccurate, but quite frankly offensive. Readers will clearly see that it contradicts the vast amount of praise our guests have for the hotel, and for this reason your review is unfounded. I trust that you received your full refund.

“Superb”

Set in beautiful surroundings, the staff, the hotel, the food and the room were excellent standard. They also allow dogs, which was good news for my Cavalier King Charles.....
