“Pretty awful. Only redeemiing feature - central & convenient location”
September 2010. A large, rather ugly, concrete block (? 1970s) run by a chain. Approx 60 rooms. The room urgently required serious updating - elderly bathroom, stained carpet, poor mattress, thin and elderly (but clean) blanket on the bed, poor television set virtually at ceiling height. Adequate soundproofing double glazing - the front of the hotel looks onto a busy road intersection and the back onto blocks of flats and dustbin areas (but with far views of mountains ………which was nice!). Basically the hotel appears to be a business stop-over hotel that has known better days. The hotel has barrier-protected parking at the front (4 euros per day) but it is not remotely secure in that it is used as a short cut by pedestrians, is surrounded only by some small shrubs and you can drive through the barrier and out of the car park without a code as the barrier opens, to exit, on a pressure pad. The hotel was not cheap - 90 euros per night, double occupancy, room only, breakfast extra (we didn't have breakfast there) plus a small daily local tax (0,61 euros per person per night).
The attached chain restaurant, Taverne Karlsbrau, was dire - we had a very poor meal (Sunday night, couldn't find anywhere else open), very slow and disorganised service and expensive.
Good things were that the hotel is very central and convenient and the reception staff were pleasant. The hotel is just a few hundred yards from a cable lift to the Grand Serre Chevalier slopes. We found Briançon itself to be a rather dull town except for its beautiful setting in a 'bowl' of mountain peaks, the hill top Vauban forts and the very pretty (but very touristy) eighteenth century Ville Haute - you can walk to this old part of town from the Parc Hotel but it is up a very steep main road and then some very steep cobbled streets once you are in the old part. There is some, but limited, parking just within and just outside the Ville Haute.
