“Lovely Week-End Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We spent our annual week-end pre-Xmas break with friends at the St George and Dragon just outside Exmouth and were delighted with the excellent staff service, great food plus the comfortable and quaint surroundings. The evening meals are most definitely far above pub grub standard with some very interesting menu choices all presented and cooked to a high standard more in keeping with a quality restaurant.
The complimentary breakfast, consisting of a wide variety of cereals, toast, fruit, yoghurt and above average coffee on a help yourself/eat as much as you like basis, was also brilliant.

The older Inn accommodation in which we stayed for 2 nights, all recently refurbished, was very comfortable and had everything that you would expect of an en suite room! Unfortunately our room was bitterly cold upon arrival due to the fact that the central heating had been turned off, no doubt by a previous occupant, but when this was pointed out the staff did everything possible to rectify the problem, providing additional portable electric heaters to warm up the room quite swiftly!
The only fault that could not be rectified concerned one of the boilers servicing the en suite radiator, which meant the bathroom was cold on the first evening, but once the central heating was on constantly this problem was negated as the bedroom also warmed the bathroom quite adequately!
The cost for two nights per couple with complimentary breakfast was extremely reasonable and I have no hesitation in recommending a stay here to anyone! It is a pity about the heating problem which we experienced as this is the only matter that prevents me from giving an excellent rating, but please do not be put off.

All in all this is a delightful base from which to explore the Dorset and Devon coastal regions!

“Better than average 'roadside fayre'”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

At last a pub a roadside pub that seem to take some pride & care over the food they serve. Delicious & sensibly priced food, in nice surroundings, little wonder when we stopped at 2pm on a Friday afternoon the restaurant was extremely busy. An extensive menu + 'Daily Specials' + the lunchtime special price 3 course selection, loads of choice !! The fillet steak & the carrot cake are highly recommended, & without hesitation next time i'm on that road out of Exeter i'll be stopping here again.

“Excellent food but noisey road....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Having arrived at 8pm on a Sunday night; before we started a 5 day stay in Devon, we soon settled into the pub and our room.
Check in was fast and efficient with happy, cheerful staff.
After checking into our room that was large, compared to other budget hotels, with a double soft bed, small bathroom with a shower only but it was just right for us.
On returning to the pub we found ourselves 2 amongst 12 others. We ordered food and drink and these were delivered with a smile and quickly. The quality of the food was excellent.
We arrived at breakfast at 8.30am. It was a continental style with a reasonable choice. Staff were sparse and when they were seen; 1 male and 1 female they found their mobile phones more interesting than interacting with the customers.
When we arrived the roads outside were quite, but by 6am they were a rat run for the morning commuters. With the Inn being on a roundabout the vehicular noise was annoying. If the Holiday Inn Express at Walsall M6 Junction 10 can be insulated against the raw of the M6, then it should be easy to do something with this Innkeepers Lodge.

“Gastro pub which could improve its performance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

My partner enjoyed the steak and mushroom pie but the oil in which my fish was cooked was well past its use by date. The chef said he was changing it on the following day - two days too late for me. Pretentious menu doesn't make up for poor food.
