I have been meaning to post this review for a while. I have been travelling to SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam) every winter for the past 3 years for holidays and I keep a fond souvenir of Phu Chasai. Most notably, the open air breakfast on the terrasse overlooking the countryside are among the best ones I have experienced in Asia (if nothing has changed since Dec 2008). Every morning was a feast with many counters preparing all sort of food in front of you and home made jams and fresh vegetables which I suspect are being grown locally. We spent NY's eve there. It was Thai style but a lot of resources had been involved. The staff was splendid too. We had a real fun evening with my fiance and we finished in the bar having drinks with the owner and other guests from France, Japan, etc. Friendly. About the rooms, I personally don't need much comfort and I thought they were fine. No TV, etc. The view / landscape was amazing. The bathrooms are open air and you will have the occasional Gecko running along the walls. The paint / finishing were getting a bit old and in need of renovation but nothing dramatic. There is a lot of bamboo in this hotel. One downside is that the hotel is far from the city, which makes it a quiet place to regroup / recover after some active travelling but expensive if you want to travel around / use as a base to visit Chiang Rai and the city. We tried to go the city by bus and it is not straight forward. You still need to book a ride with the hotel to get to the main highway. However, in short it is a good resort / hotel. I hope it hasn't changed too much.
