“First Class in every way !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

The Rising Sun Hotel is a thriving Inn of first class quality.
I stayed in room 9 on Wednesday 18th Jan 2012. I booked and paid for bed and breakfast on line and paid just £45. At twice this price I would not have complained, and this is a place I shall certainly return to whenever I have work in the Cheltenham area.
The bar and restaurant are pretty well packed, and there is a reason for this, the food is 1st class. The staff are completely 1st class, they are kind, attentive and very professional. I particulary liked the two members of staff from Hungary, they served me at the bar and in the restaurant and they were just superb !
My room was very nice, very quiet, warm and had really good quality furniture. The TV was large and worked well, the tea and coffee facilities superb. The shower was fantastic, really hot and powerful.
Upon arrival, I noticed the car park was 90% full, which I have come to realise is a good sign, Wednesday was quiz night, and the place had a really nice atmosphere. The view from the big window in the restaurant/breakfast room is great ! And let me tell you, the breakfast was just great. Very good quality ingredients that were cooked properly.
They advertise free Wi-Fi in the rooms and bar, and even this is true ! It really worked well and I measured the speed in room 9 at 1.98 mbps download, and 0.16 mbps upload, perfectly adequate for fast Internet surfing and sending your e mails.

I recommed The Rising Sun 100 % and I am going there again.

Richard Kaminski.

“Lovely spot but a quite old, rambling hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Quite a large complex with big dining areas and on the night we stopped, lots of customers including many outside on the terraces. The first room we were offered was directly above one of the main outside terraces and the noise was impossible, so we only waited 5 minutes before going to reception who then reallocated us different rooms on the ground floor at the back of the hotel; these were found to be much quieter. As the rooms have no airconditioning, if the weather is a bit warm the only option is to open the window so noise can be a problem at this hotel from the hotel patrons and the adjoining main road.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room at the rear of the hotel, not one overlooking the main road or the terraces; yo...

“Good Food - shame about the smelly room.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

We stayed at the “Rising Sun Hotel” for two nights on a deal with Old English Inns/Hotels. The weather wasn’t great but I can imagine on a clear sunny day the views over the “Cleeve Hills” would be outstanding.

The hotel was very lively at mealtimes. We dined in the bar area on both evenings and we were not disappointed by the quality of the food. The breakfasts were also very good with fresh fruit and muffins as well as all the usual choice of breakfast cereals in addition to a good selection of traditional hot food choices from the menu, the staff were friendly, smart and efficient.

The surrounding views from the hotel were great and the garden at the front was well kept with ample car parking at the rear.

However, as we walked into the corridor leading to our room (number 2) we noticed a stale smell, it became more intense upon entering the room and it seemed to be coming from the bathroom.

We asked at the reception for some air freshener but we were told that the cleaning items were locked away, the receptionist said that she was going off duty but she would leave a message for the next person on duty. We never heard another word, so we went and bought our own air freshener in an attempt to mask the smell.

After some spraying in the hotel corridor and in our room after a while the smell still persisted, more so from the tired and rather worn out bathroom furniture. On further investigation we found the shower area and curtain had a stale soapy smell, evidenced by the brown staining on the bottom of the curtain.

On the morning of our departure we noticed there was some re-decorating work being undertaken in the hotel so hopefully over time the smell problem might disappear from the corridor.

You might agree that hotel owner/managers should spend a few nights in their hotel bedrooms so that they can become aware of any problems and experience what their guests might have to endure whilst staying at their premises!

“Warm and Friendly”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

As a solo traveler, I was very comfortable at this hotel. The staff is friendly and professional, the breakfast is abundant and delicious, the pub comfortable, and the rooms well appointed. Who could ask for more? What about the view? Perched atop Cleeve Hill the public spaces of this hotel offer panoramic views and easy access to walking trails and cute Cotswold villages.
