“Lovely hotel, but in the middle of nowhere!”

After we booked this holiday and read some of the reviews we were a bit unsure what to expect. We were flying into Monastir which is a long way from the resort, and we'd heard some horrible stories about the transfer. When we arrived it was the hottest day of their year so far, and it was midday and we had a 3 hour bus journey...not a good start. It was 49c!! We were told we'd have to change transport after 2 hours of the journey when we arrived at Hammamet to get another bus. The first coach was unbearably hot...no air con in 49c heat! But when we arrived at Hammamet to change transport we had a pleasant surprise. There was a nice, brand new renault clio, with air conditioning waiting for us. The next part of the journey was lovely : ) and took about 45mins.
So I advise anyone to fly to Tunis airport, not Monastir.
The hotel is not well situated. It is surrounded by wasteland. But once within the hotel gates it is a different world.
Pool is nice, beach is beautiful, and the food is great too, but perhaps a little repetitive.
We were the only English people in the whole resort! It was all French and German people. We were a bit bored because of this, however most of the animaton staff spoke some English.
The hotel is definitely catered for french and german people. And the tv in the room only has french and german channels.
We went quad biking within the resort on the 5th day, would definitely recommend it! Also the massage place is very good, and very cheap.
There is a trainers shop, and they sell lots of new trainers, such as Nike Shox. They look real, but you can get ripped off. We managed to barter him down from £120 for two pairs, to £50. Two pairs of Nike shox is a bargain!
Barter for everything! We bought some fake designer sunglasses from the resort marker (weds) for the equivalent of £8, when the price originally started out at £70!! Just keep walking away until they give you a decent price.
Lastly, I advise you to take a bottle of JD whiskey as it is like gold dust out there, being a muslim country, they can only buy alcohol from 2 places in Tunisia. Whiskey is very good for bartering. You can probabaly get some trainers and a leather jacket in exchange for a bottle of JD!
The resort is very good for famililes, and for people who aren't interested in venturing out of the resort. Plenty of sunbeds for lounging around all day by the pool or beach, plenty of sports and activities going on, and very good evening entertainment. Just a warning...the animaton team can get a little annoying as they want you to join in with EVERYTHING. Its annoying when all you want to do is sunbathe and chill out, and you've got someone tugging at your arm to join in with their dance or competition.
Hope this is useful : )

“Could not fault the Sun Beach Resort.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2007

I was somewhat apprehensive after reading the negative reviews.
However, I could not find fault with the Hotel, the food, my room or the staff. Obviously, it was a great advantage to speak French which I did all week - the practice was good for me. Being in my 70's, I had little interest in the evening's entertainment and requested a brighter light bulb by my bed so that I could read -it was quickly fitted. I saw no flies near the food and the water supplied is not tap water, but perfectly acceptable mineral water. The taxi from Tunis airport took 40 minutes.

My only reservation was that the Resort could have been anywhere and I had no desire to lie in the sun all day as many did - I prefer to explore the area and meet the locals. Because of the remote location, this was not possible. There is a security gate at the entrance followed by a long driveway and when I ordered a taxi to take me to Carthage, the driver had problems getting through the security. I did get to Carthage which is well worth the effort,

In some ways I felt rather like an inmate in a luxury prison.

“Stay Away if you don't want food poisoning!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2007

Booked this holiday as a last minute get away with four adults and one small child. Was reasonably cheap so didn't mind hearing some bad reviews. Flight was ok but transfer was a nightmare as was roughly three hours, changing from a nice coach to a small and cramped minibus after two hours. Hotel looked nice when arrived but problems started immediatly. No lifts on the grounds so suitcases had to be dragged up three levels with no help. Room with four year old had no lock on balcony, which we were told was normal, broken glass outside room which was not cleaned up. After three rooms one was finally found which was suitable. Rooms cleaned daily whether you want them done or not, so ensure all money is hiden as the cleaners will think it is for them! Clothes stolen from balcony! Food and drink was horrid, buy bottled water from shop as tap water given in hotel. Same food daily, lots of flies around. Ended up buying all own soft drinks and snacks from shop which was really cheap, but was supposed to be All Inclusive. We were 5 of around 12 English speaking in whole hotel - staff not very easy to communicate with. Entertainment was awful as all spoken in French and German. All were ill with three having been diagnosed food poioning back in England. Be careful about people selling excursions, always see your rep first. Constantly pestered whilst sunbathing to buy things. Do not go to massage shop as waste of money - I bought a 40 min massage and was out after 10, sister bought a package for 2 hours and was out after 30 mins! Overall, worst holiday could ever imagine and could not possibly put down in words how bad it was. If not for the sun and the slide in the pool all five would be in rooms all day. Not worth the money at all, not even as a cheap get away.

“Please don't go!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2006

Went 13/09/06-20/09/06. Oh my goodness, this was our worst holiday ever. Hotel ok, room basic. Nothing for holiday makers outside the gates of this very remote hotel complex. Food tasted nice, loads of choice, looked impressive, but by day 2, we both started to get horribly ill. Fever and the runs were the main thing, we couldn't leave the room for a couple of days, we were too bad. Ate just bread, and had bottled water from the shop. No where else to go to eat, saw and spoke to lots of others that were ill, just sticking to plain rice or pasta, and bottled water. Flies all over snack bar pizza's - yuk! They cooked big pizza's there for dinner later, and left them for ages not covered, we saw this and never ate them. One day my hotel towel arrived, with brown poo stains on from someone else... eww, complained, got fresh towel, but it made me feel sick. Another night near the end of hol, dared to get some bbq chicken to eat thinking it would be ok, broke mine open first before eating (thank goodness) it was so raw in the middle you wouldnt believe it. Eventually got to speak to head chef, he didnt care! He said I'd do it like that myself at home, the bbq chef had forgotten to turn just that one piece. No apology, he just said we could have some more chicken if we wanted it, then walked off, leaving us with lady interpreting for him. I was so upset. Man from reception was there with us then, and he was lovely, offered to book us in for their Italian restuarant for the following day if we wanted, but I didn't. Our cleaning lady was nice too, we saw her every day as we were always in our room! Only managed to go to the beach a couple of times and to the pool once. Went on the trip to Tunis just to get out of hotel, all coach full of French, just us 2 and another lovely Irish couple, guide didn't bother to translate into English, told us we'd got on the wrong coach, but there wasn't another one. Rushed us round the museum and sightseeing so he could make us spend more time in shops of his choosing so we could buy rugs and perfume, obviously he would have got a backhander out of that. We'd have rather spent ages in the museum and sightseeing.Ate out that day, chicken stew, my partner checked his before eating... it was raw inside! Couldn't wait to get home, wished the days away. Transfer back to airport, driver turned up an hour late then drove like a madman on a 3 hour transfer. Digital camera went missing somewhere on that last day. Got home, so happy. Spent a week recovering from the gastro enteritus, missed some time at work as was so bad. Still had fever and came out in a huge rash which was apparantly the toxins coming out, frightening to get that after you've looked forward to this holiday all year. We sent a complaint in through rep while there for food poisoning and dirty towel, and have to send in another for the raw chicken, and they will get a full letter of complaint too. Still cannot believe that was our holiday, felt like a nightmare.

couldnt go outanyway cos of sickness etc 95 percent of entertainment in french . swimming pool is lovely and majority of staff very friendly and very good with kids. highlight was our cleaner who was so funny and worked very hard. just remembered got a bottle of water on arrival but we had to ask and my boyfriend swears it was filled up from the tap. reception area toilets were never stocked up either no loo roll or no soap and these were next to dining area. reallly glad when hometime came got to monastir and customs official stole 50 pound sterling off my partner when he searched him. got it back when i
caused a commotion and my partner insisted 50 quid was missing so please beware of that. all in all when landed at gatwick i could have kissed the ground. iam going to complain officially will be asking for my money back shouldnt send english to this hotel.
