We went here for the 2pm sitting on Christmas day for lunch, as a party of three. The arrangements were payment in full prior to attending (£180), and you picked your menu selections in advance.
There is a large atrium in the centre of the hotel, in which are many settees and chairs for casual drinks and snacks which is nice. We arrived 20 minutes prior to our booked time, and it was obviously quite busy. There were no 'meet or greeters' at the entrance so we took a seat. Due to the size of the place and the people milling about we did not know that complimentary champagne and orange juice, until we headed towards the Restaurant entrance to dine.
When we approached the Dining Room, there was no-one to greet you, no signs or anything to tell you what the procedure and we stood there aimlessly for a while with some other guests. Eventually, we were approached and checked off against a guest list, then led to a table.
the whole event was pretty lack lustre. The management did not have a set waiter serving a group of tables, but it all seemed random - giving you the feeling that you were not being looked after. It was difficult to catch anyone's attention to get drinks, and twice I had to stand up and walk across to one of the waiters. The majority of the Staff working the tables were from abroad, and the ones that we dealt with spoke poor and broken English and it was very difficult to get across what you wanted.
The food was okay, not bad but not brilliant - it was a touch on the ' nouvelle cuisine' side, in so far as the portions were small but nicely presented. We had had a tough year, and this was a treat to ourselves and we thought that going a little upmarket and paying the extra would give us that something a little more special; sadly it was far from this and we wouldn't go again. It lacked atmosphere, personal attention and quality.
I paid the drinks bill on exit, and retired to the seating area in the atrium for coffee, and was approached by a member of Staff for not paying my drinks bill; a little embarrassing as I had to fumble around for the receipt to prove I had.
A one-off experience, and this year we will be going to an upmarket pub rather than a hotel - lesson learnt.
