I stayed at Greenways on a business trip to Cape Town; the hotel was selected for its close proximity to the Vineyard Hotel where I usually reside (it was unfortunately full). It is true that Greenways has magnificent grounds and is in a prime location, but the olde world charm tends more towards looking tired and in need of a serious make-over than is suitable in a five star establishment.
The check in process, after a long working day, was painful and ineffcient. Despite the hotel being virtually empty, it took several phone calls to determine which room I was allocated and I was asked to provide my ID book and credit card which I was not comfortable with.
Breakfasts were rushed, as the full menu option had to be ordered and took ages to be prepared which is not ideal when service only starts at 7am (not suitable for the business traveller). The cold breakfast selection was dismal at best and was exactly the same everyday which is fine at the City Lodge, but unacceptable for a 5 star hotel; the staff were overbearing without being attentative and the dinning room a little dishevelled to say the least. Generally I entered the dinning room without a sign of any service personnel and in fact only discovered teh full breakfast option two days into my stay.
The room was spacious and the bed extremely comfortable. The mini-bar was so poorly stocked as to make me think it should rather be done away with. The bathroom was clean, but the shower a bit make-shift with a shower head that forced me to huddle into the corner to get wet - in such a spacious en-suite one would expect a decent shower! The overall decor in the room is very tired unless you are happy in a mid-eighties time warp. Also, the room had no tea/ coffee making facilities which really irked me.
Remote controls for the gate are not provided which often resulted in me having to reverse back up the driveway to request the gate be opened. The same is true when one retruns late in the evening; it is very annoying.
On checking out, the personnel were unable to access the computer system which delayed my departure somewhat before all extras were finally voided from my account.
Greenways has lots of potential, but it fails to deliver. At 3 stars and 50% of the price it would be great value but at 5 stars and nearly R 1000/ person/ night I can happily recommend several preferable establishment a stone's throw away.
I don't think I will be returning for another bowl of rice crispies!!

Dear Mr. Y.
I read with great concern about your unpleasant stay with us. We pride ourselves in providing great accommodation and great services, which is borne out by the many great reviews we are fortunate to receive in this forum. I am happy that you immediately after your stay pointed out the problem areas, enabling us to address them swiftly. We will definitely look at our breakfast times, cold buffet selection, attentiveness of our staff at reception and in the dining room.
A number of rooms have recently be upgraded including DVD/CD players, etc. upgrading is an ongoing process in the hotel. Our reception staff must have overlooked to ask you on check-in whether you would like a tea/coffee station in your room. Most of our guests prefer their tea/coffee being served to their room and are happy with the selection (white wine, beers, minerals and cool drinks) provided in the mini bars free of charge and order additional beverages from the bar.
I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our extra length kingsize beds and had a good sleep in our tranquil establishment surrounded by 6 acres of park like gardens only 12 minutes from the buzzing waterfront.
Kind regards from a warm and sunny cape town
Susanne Faussner
