“Comfy stay at a popular eaterie”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Yet another Groupon Deal - this time closer to home, our first time at The White Lion, but propably not the last - on arrival we heard the receptionist mutter "oh, not another groupon" and that didn't fill us with joy to be fair - but we are not travellers who let first impressions put us off (the staff have to do that!) Our room (7) was clean tidy and a little cold, during our meal in the restaraunt I asked our waitress (Tiffany - excellent service) if we could get a heater for our room - and she duly obliged without any fuss, and the heater really made a diffrence!
Modern decor gives this place a really distinctive look, the seating was also very good, as for the food? the meals we had were tasty, and correctly proportioned - all in all a very good advert for the Greene King Empire. Reccomended.

Room Tip: Try Room 7 - end room that is slightly larger.

“Je ne sais quoi !”

I thought it would be a great idea to stay at the Inn as my company had booked here for the anual festive gathering.I received a warm welcome from the bar maid and the locals in a lovely warm reception room. I was escorted to my room above the Inn, which ticked all the boxes, cosy, clean, fluffy towels, all facilities and lovely shower room. The night just got better, a great selection of real ales and the food was fantastic, in particular the cheese board. All this was supported by great service and a happy atmosphere all around I would not hesitate to stay here again. I observed a notice board which said ' Je ne sais quoi ' disttinctive indeed or as they say north of the border ' braw ' Thanks for a great stay !

“Will definitely come back again!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

We also recently visited The White Lion Inn having purchased a Groupon voucher. We stayed on a Thursday evening so it was relatively quiet.

Positives...when we arrived we were greeted warmly and shown up to our room (a room above the bar) - we were shown a few things in the room e.g. the tea making facilities etc. Check-in was definitely hassle-free. The bedroom was lovely - we were surprised at how spacious it was given the age of the property - the room (and ensuite) was very clean; there was a good sized wardrobe, desk and all the usual facilities. The bathroom also had complimentary shower gel etc which was a nice touch - the bathroom had clearly not long been renovated. The bar area was very homely and welcoming - we had a drink in the evening and by no means felt 'pushed out' by the locals (as you can do at some village pub/b&bs). The bar has a lot of character. We didn't eat in the pub in the evening (although we could have done) - there were plenty of people in there so it is clearly popular!

Negatives... Our night's sleep was disrupted as the pub's burglar alarm went off about midnight and we were right above! This was quite inconvenient but the owner was more than apologetic the following morning. Breakfast itself was brilliant - tea/coffee and full english - all fantastic ingredients and very tasty (and lots of it) - however, when we came downstairs for breakfast there was no-one there to greet us (or another couple) for about 30 minutes!! That was a bit concerning - we couldn't even help ourselves to cereal or juice as there was no milk or bowls etc! But when breakfast did come it was good and quick. In addition, the evening previous we were able to get a bottle of wine (red, white or rose) as part of our Groupon deal - however we weren't allowed to have rose, only white or red (neither of which we care for). We wouldn't have minded this had the voucher not explicitly stated you could have rose.

Overall...a few hiccups which could be easily improved. Value for money - definitely (although we were on a discounted Groupon deal of course). Would we stay here again? Yes, definitely, and we would (and have) recommended it to friends.

“A pub and proud of it...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

The White Lion Inn is a pub first and foremost, serving good food and good beer, in a lovely old building. It's clearly popular with locals as demonstrated on both the nights we stayed there and it's sometimes easy to forget that when you stay in a pub with rooms you can't expect 'hotel' facilities... We stayed here after a day at the NEC Bike Show and were cheerily welcomed on arrival and shown to our room 'in the garden'. As an earlier contributor stated, these rooms are small and the bathroom is a tight squeeze to say the least - but we don't mind that as it contributes to the fun of staying away.
There was a problem with the shower which wasn't resolved to our satisfaction but that aside, we had a pleasant break and all the staff made us feel welcome. The restaurant has a delightful menu and we dined there both nights - I can recommend the belly pork. We have stayed in many pubs and noise from the bar can be a problem, so if you have the option of a room away from the bar take it - if you don't like noise then I suggest you stay in a hotel... This pub offers great value for money in a great location and we would stay again!

Room Tip: There are outside rooms available if you want to avoid the inevitable buzz of the bar.

“Lovely Atmosphere”

We stopped off for a meal here after dropping the girls off for a show at the NEC.
We ordered a drink in one of the front bars, this one had a roaring open fire in it, lovely. Then ambled through to the restaurant which spreads across the whole back of the pub. The new decoration had just been finished that day, and it looks great. I had Beer battered Cod and chips, the fish was cooked so well it just melted in your mouth, as did the crispy batter and peas, it also came with a sald which went perfectly, my partner had Peppered steak pie which I'm told was lovely too. We followed with Cheese and biscuits, Stilton, Brie, Cheddar and a Garlic and Herb Roulade, gorgeous! The food was excellent as was the decor and atmosphere, the staff were very attentive but not intrusive, and a very warm and friendly welcome was given, so much so that we will be returning there next time we are in the area. Fantastic place, and recommended.
