“Not what was advertised, not what was promissed”

Our summer vacations were to go ride peruvian horses, enjoy the pool, and receive a 5 star service and attention, so we carefully chose San Pedro Viejo, because it matched all of our needs.
We had several emails and phone conversations with the reservations person,Lucia, and she confirmed the availabilityof the place, the horses, and that she would be around to greet us so having such a great telephone attention, we decided to make the reservations and took the bus out of Buenos Aires as she recommended.
After travelling 900kms (the bus was a good option to get there), nobody was there to explain to us anything, so the couple of people working at this Estancia (understaffed from my perspective),told us that the host would be arriving in a couple of days. That would be OK for us, but we needed to talk to someone about the rest of the situation:
1) there was no water when we arrived, although there was water in the afternoon, imagine our frustration not knowing if that would happen everyday!
2) there was no food served when we got there, although later we did get something to eat, meals where served in an unscheduled way, so you had to ask by what time you would eat! We travelled with our 3 daughters, being the youngest 3, common sense would help the cook figure out that dinner time was not after 10pm almost everyday. During the day, you had just too many flies and eating without having the fear of swallowing one, was impossible. Eating outside in the quincho was pintoresque, but they should do something to reduce the hundreds of flies!
3) the pool was dirty, and I mean, you couldnt see the bottom, and although its the middle of the country and some dirt would be reasonable, the color of the pool itself was not helpful (greenish gray, awful),however, because of the hot weather, we still used it a couple of times after it was a bit cleaner.
4) they hadnt payed Direct TV for some months, so on rainy days, you had no TV, although they did have many videos that you could pick from, you only needed to find something and agree upon with the other guests
5) NO CELL PHONE SIGNAL! You are completely isolated, you could get signal at Dean Funes, which is 45 minutes away, but you had no phone signal and NO PHONEs at the Estancia.
6) Of course, NO INTERNET, which on vacations you wouldnt mind, but because of my work I needed to be connected once every couple of days, the availability they offered was one of the top 3 reasons for deciding on going to sanpedro viejo.
7) The worst part was that the day we arrived, the horses LEFT! We had clearly told them that we were going there because of the horses, this was very dissapointing. They were sending the horses to Jesus Maria (an annual horse event). We had payed in advance, and we had no car, no internet, no cell so we didnt have any option of just driving away. The cook was in charge and he told us that he would be getting more horses for us. They rented horses (criollos) which allowed us to ride every day. The staff was friendly and helpfull and their attitude allowed us to enjoy and not completely spoil my familys vacation, but I would not go back and certainly not recommend it.
8) The rooms are beautifully decorated, very comfortable, but we got 2 days of pouring rain, and there was rain inside all of the rooms, we had a major problem in ours!
9) there were also a couple of useless bikes, broken down. there was only one car which they used to do the groceries shopping, which also broke down
10) Carlos, the only gaucho of the place, took us riding every day, as requested by us, morning and afternoon. He is very well experienced and extremely carefull, and he was very helpful. He tried to make it up to us, and did enjoy the every day rides. the scenery was unbeatable, the weather was hot but the wind made it tolerable.
I must recognize that they tried to make it up, but the effort was not enough.
and it is just too far away and a long trip to deepen the dissapointment.

Room Tip: there are only 7 rooms, be clear on requesting the one that is right for you, ie, close to the dinin...

“Fabulous- Wish we could have stayed longer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

My family came here after leaving another Estancia, and this place was so much better. The atmosphere is rustic yet luxurious. There are only a few guest rooms so you almost feel like you have the place to yourself! Diego (the host and owner) is constantly around to ensure you are having a nice time. We went out on a horse ride and had such as fun time. We could only stay for a night and wish we had more time. It's a 3 hour ride from Cordoba, but we are glad we made the trek. You truly are in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by the beautiful Sierras of Patagonia.

The place is a bit pricey - $200 per person per night, but this does include activities, delicious food (ex. filet mignon for lunch) and beautiful, clean rooms. It's worth the splurge.

I saw that some people noted issues with pool cleanliness -- the pool was clean when we went.

Room Tip: Ours had a view of the pool which we really liked.

“Unique and splendid!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

If there is one place on Earth you want to know, to be, and to come back, you cannot miss San Pedro Viejo. You will ride the best Peruvian horses, spend hours in silence along the Camino Real, where the Pampa ends and the first hills of the Cordoba Sierra start. The hotel has 4 stone buildings: two are reserved for the hotel : one with nicely decorated dinning room and breakfast areas and 5 ample bed rooms with suite, the other is the genuine relay ("posta") from the XVII century, with 3 huge bedrooms, also en suite ("Belgrano" is the biggest and most exquisite one). The small chapel, with its genuine articulated wood Christ from the early XVII century is a rare jewel planted in the middle of nowhere -but less than 2 hours north from Cordoba airport-. The fourth building is inhabited by Martin, the chef, and Diego and Gloria the managers of this peaceful realm. Great and original dishes with local flavors will not deceive and if you are lucky enough, you could even enjoy live music from the sons of this wonderful family of singers, architects and interior designers, and above all, lovers of horses and nature. Water is drinkable, Internet is more than acceptable, but cell phone coverage is bad.

Room Tip: Belgrano is a great room in the old relay building in front of a lovely pond. The room in front of t...

“Complete Rejuvenation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

A fantastic place to stay, a combination of tradition and warm hospitality.
We stayed for 4 nights but would happily have stayed for longer. The accomodation was amazing and nothing was too much trouble.
It is relaly a place where you can do as much or as little as you want. We were one of the few people to take advantage of the horses (which were all well kept, healthy and very gentle - even for novice riders), and were lucky enough to go out with the gauchos to check the cattle and help vaccinate the herd. A real experience :-)
We enjoyed our stay so much that we are going back again early next year - but for longer this time!

Room Tip: The Belgrano room was great with connecting doors through to a big lounge, dining room and kitchen.

“Wonderful experience”

Very much enjoyed our stay at SPV. Comfortable room, set in great surroundings. There's a lot to do so could easily spend a week + at this estancia. We enjoyed the estate tour (beautiful chapel for example and lots of animals - especially the lovely dogs), the riding and excursion to the nearby salt flats. Our hostess lady was especially friendly and helped arrange everything for us.

I think this place is as luxurious as it gets in such a remote area. Authenticity of the experience is still maintained though. Food is great for meat lovers. As a vegetarian I suspect I drew the short straw.. Breakfast is a pretty basic buffet spread. Snacks are also available, but this place is remote so would suggest taking some snacks with you if you have particular dietary preferences.

Riding was excellent - we greatly enjoyed it even as complete beginners. In hindsight, would've probably taken some lessons before going though to enjoy it even more as we didn't know Spanish so communication with the riding guide was very limited and off we just went.

Lastly, a travel tip. We took a night bus from Buenos Aires, arrived in Cordoba in the morning and the estancia arranges for a pickup from there. Drive is about an hour.

Room Tip: All great - though the yellow one at the end of the accommodation building was probably most spaciou...
