“A really lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

Melvich is a tiny village, some 20 miles West of Thurso. Luckily we did not find a B&B in Thurso and ended up in Melvich, one evening under drizzling but fastidious rain.

The house overlooks a lovely bay: pity that we had mostly fog and mist when we were there. The room was slightly on the small side: not much space to open the suitcases. But it was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom spotless and brand new.

Excellent breakfast: the best we had in Scotland. Smoked salmon, surrounded by fresh cherry tomatoes and soft and juicy scrambled eggs (farm eggs). Cutlery and crockery very refined and elegant. Breakfast room overlooks a small rear garden where hares, birds and squirrels can be see dashing around while you eat. Really a treat to start your day with.

Tony is an attentive host, very pleasant, willing to spare a lot of his time in conversation. His dog, a black Labrador to the name of Skipper, was a major hit with my son. The whole impression is of quiteness and calm and attention for the guests.

I warmly recommend it as an ideal place to visit the North-East coast of Scotland.

“A lovely, friendly B&B, looking out towards the Orkneys”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2011

We stayed here many years ago and, now in new ownership, enjoyed our stay this time equally well. Spotlessly clean, excellent breakfast and Tony and Helen were most warm and welcoming. An ideal base from which to explore the Pentland Firth area. Many thanks!

Colin & Carol, Devon.

“Five star hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2007

On first arrival this appears to be a B&B in a small remote bungalow with nothing to justify the five star rating gained from the Scottish Tourist Board.

This impression is soon dispelled by the warmth of the wonderful welcome given and the homely interior.

My wife and I spent three nights here in July 2007.

The breakfasts were great - we did'nt need lunch. At only around 75 uk pounds for the room including breakfast for two this is great value.

Steps up to the front door present an access problem for those with impaired mobility.

“5 Star B&B with a 6 Star breakfast”

Joan and Hugh Campbell run this bed and breakfast and you can see the love that goes into it from the welcome you get when you arrive. Everything is lovely and the view from the bedroom and also the dining room and lounge are just spectacular - out over the bay at Melvich. The breakfast has so many choices that you need to stay ages to try them all! There's quite a lot to see locally apart from getting the ferry from nearby over to Orkney. Next time we stay we'll maybe do that trip although I also want to see the Queen Mother's Castle of Mey which is nearby - can't wait for another visit!
