“Overpriced, Underfurnised.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2007

A real disappointment. Paper thin mattresses, broken showers, and a hair dryer that must be shared by several rooms, all in sparsely furnished rooms (our party used three). Unfortunately, road crews started work right outside our windows at 7 AM each morning. The staff was friendly (as is everyone in Ireland), but seemed to accept the condition with no ambition to upgrade, or even buy another hairdryer.

Conveniently located in the center of this small village, so you can walk everywhere. Also, Newmarket on Fergus is a good base from which to tour the Cliffs of Mohr and the Galway coast, and then fly out the next day.

Suggest an alternative place to stay: The Fergus Lodge, also in Newmarket on Fergus, and a bed and breakfast. Also, considerably cheaper than the Hunter's Lodge.

“Why all the hype?”

This was a friendly place, but was not what I expected based on its Fodor's review. The room was sparsely furnished. Real beds (not a 3-inch mattress on a frame) would have been nice and added considerably to the comfort. Shower was poor and there was no hairdryer. (The lone hairdryer left in the common area was taken by another guest and not returned.) Food was OK - just so-so pub grub but nothing to get crazy over. Although they say much of the traffic has been eliminated with the bypass, if you were there during a warm time of year when the windows needed to be open (no AC), it would probabaly be quite noisy. It was, however, in a great location to get to Shannon airport.

“Top of the charts”

My wife and I and our friends have stayed at the Lodge many times in the past ten years. It's the best place to stay anytime your are in that area. You will find an excellent pub, friendly staff, and great food at a reasonable price. The rooms are clean and beautifullly decorated. All you have to do is walk downstairs to the pub and restaurant

One added feature is that the main road to Ennis no longer goes by the Lodge, so the traffic noise is cut by 90%. It is now a very quiet place to stay.

Another feature is that it is less than 15 minutes to Shannon with no traffic on the backroad.

If the Lodge is booked and you stay at a local B&B, do yourself a favor and have your main meal at the Lodge. You won't regret it. Slainte

“Perfect place to shake off your jetlag”

Stayed at Hunters Lodge upon arriving from Shannon airport. If you're not pressed for time on your journey, this is the perfect place to relax for a couple of days and shake off your jetlag. You have all the sights of County Clare within a short distance, and can retire to Hunters Lodge each night, without having to worry about hunting down good food or a good pint. I've had that most common of Irish pub appetizers, garlic mushrooms, dozens of times, but have never had better than those served to me with my pint at Hunters Lodge. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Should definitely be your first or last stop when arriving/departing from Shannon. (Why would you arrive/depart from anywhere else?)

Great place. Stayed there on the last night before flying out of Shannon. Very friendly. Good for a first or last night. Late night food nearby.
