I stayed at Dunaree three different times over the course of my last stay – sixteen days up and down the west coast of Ireland.
Dunaree is very conveniently located – the third B & B on the Low Road past the castle and Durty Nellie's. It's a really great launching pad for the beginning of your tour of Ireland. It's also one of the best places to unwind and get reorganized for your outgoing flight. Bunratty is a very easy drive from Shannon Airport -- just 15 minutes. If you're new to driving in Ireland, it's a great place to hone your driving chops. The roads are wide, a cinch to navigate, and surprisingly empty. I like arriving at Shannon so much better than Dublin.
Dunaree itself is beautiful – set back from the quiet road with a wide expanse of lawn and a splendid view of an open field. The house is large, attractive, and comfortable with a nicely appointed sitting room – stylishly decorated with comfy chairs and a television.
The bedrooms feature large bathrooms and European-style power showers. The towels? Big and fluffy! The breakfasts? Fabulous! Coffee is among the best I've had in Ireland. Be sure to try the pancakes. I was lucky enough to have himself – Kevin O'Connor – whip some up for me on Saturday morning . . . home from his day job with Shannon Heritage. Don't expect American-style pancakes if you're from the States. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
If you've had any experience with B & Bs you know that the best of hosts are friendly and helpful -- that's part of running a good business. Some, though, have a certain something that others may lack.
Penny is one person who falls into that category – the right amount of attention to your needs and the right amount of consideration of your personal space and time schedule. She's very charming, warm, and likable.
If she has availability, Penny will even open her house to you for an early morning arrival. My plane got in at 6:00 am, and by 7:30 (after picking up my car, etc) I was already settled in and catching up on the sleep I'd lost coming over from Boston.
Bunratty has good restaurants and shopping nearby. The Folk Park, Bunratty Castle, and Durty Nellie's Pub are a straight and very short shot down the road -- it takes seconds to get there by car (free car parking, too). Penny may have a Folk Park guide for you to borrow – very helpful. All of these places can be great fun and informative despite the tourist trappings.
Penny and Kevin will fill you in on the details of what to see and where to go in the Bunratty area.
I really like this B & B. Penny and Kevin O'Connor are a very attractive, fun couple – and very excellent hosts.
