“Best place on three continents and 20 years of travel.”

My family and two friends - 8 in total - only intended to stay one night on our trip to Ireland (July '11) but were so well taken care of by Paddy and Maureen, so impressed with the quality of the accomodations and enjoyed the sumptous breakfasts so much that we stayed an extra three nights. In future when we visit Ireland we will fly into Shannon airport instead of Dublin just so we can stay here again - it honestly is that great a place. The bedrooms were spotlessly clean, plenty of hot water in the showers, an easy walk (oldest member of our party late 60's, youngest 10) to Bunratty, the meals were outstanding as was the genuine friendliness of Paddy and Maureen. Maureen arranged a night out for us at the Castle that we would otherwise not have been able to go to and Paddy is a born racontour. We really felt a wrench at leaving these kind and hospitable people. The icing on the cake was the value for money - I have never felt so well looked after, and everyone of us agreed it added a fantastic episode to our trip. Rarely have I ever felt that I spent money so well and so wisely. I cannot understand the low ratings others have left - there has to be more to it than they are saying.

“Easy to find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

Good place to stay when going to the folk park and castle. Very easy to find from the directions posted. She was nice enough, not overally like most Irish ladies who run B and B's.Even though she let us leave our bags in our room 4 hours early. The room was clean and comfy, the breakfast was full and good. There was a wash cloth (facecloth) which was only the 2nd B and B out of 7 others where we stayed to have this..we loved the cows out back of our window in the morning, they were going from the neighbors farm to the field next door and they were fun to watch. Room was large, with a nice table too.

“Also felt taken...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

When we arrived at the B & B, no one was there. We had a reservation so she should have known not to be gone for too long. After trying the bell several times their son-in-law happened by and came up. He let us in and after checking to see what room we were assigned, he left. About an hour later the owner came. She just walked into our room without knocking and asked "How did you get in here"? We told her that her son-in-law let us in, she turned around and left. The place is decorated nicely but very dark, they don't turn any lights on even in the late evening. The temps ran between 50 and 64 degrees during our stay but there was no heat on in the room. The second evening I finally asked if we could get some heat in the room. Mr. O'Donovan turned it on but only left it on for two hours or so. My husband thanked Mrs. O'Donovan the next morning for turning it on and she made some smart remark about they are hardier than us. If we thought we would be able to get another place to stay for the three nights we definitely would have left the first day. They advertise that tea and coffee are available. But it was never offered to us. It seemed like the less they had to do, the better. I can't believe some of these reviews are for the same place. We don't recommend Bunratty Woods to anyone...keep driving!

“Dirty. Go somewhere else.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

We felt "taken," particularly because this B and B was recommended by Fodor's. Times are hard for Irish Band Bs in terms of lack of business - so even more reason for the hostess to take care of her property and guests.

1) Dirty - globs of black hair in the shower and sink. Gross. Dust throughout the bathroom and the room.

2) Not sure that the sheets were changed either.

3) Breakfast was the worst meal we had in Ireland. Instant coffee and "pancakes." Pretty sure pancakes were offered because they are cheaper than eggs (which would have been OK, but they were pretty awful pancakes.)

4) Expensive for what we got - 55 Euro. Hostess asked us if we would pay in cash instead of a credit card (which would have been OK if we'd been asked to do so up front - but doing so would have involved us finding an ATM and paying an exchange rate fee). Told her no, but it was awkward.

I hate to diss people after the fact, but we were treated as 'rubes." And it's a shame too, because the hostess knows a lot of the local lore.

“Nice Quiet B&B close to Shannon Airport”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

The hotel is close to Shannon Airport. It is a little hard to find if you don't have a map and just wrote down the directions. It's on Lower Rd which is not low at all. It's actually up the road between Bunratty Castle and Dirty Nellys pub. We didn't eat the breakfast there but it smelled good.

The room and bathroom were clean. The beds were comfortable but small.

There is no alarm clock or phone. So bring your own. We could not get log onto the internet and it was late so there was no one to ask about it.
