“Great trip, nice townhouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

First of all, we noticed that Shannon Shamrock Hotel was closed completely. I'm not sure what relation, if any, that hotel has to the Bunratty Castle Garden Townhouses, but we were very pleased with the overall accommodations. We booked through Travelzoo and got an amazing deal (less than $1000 US per person) and staying in a 4 BR/3Bath townhouse. It was clean and nice accommodations for the short amount of time we were actually in it--most of the time was spent touring the cities in Ireland by rental car. The staff at check in was extraordinarily accommodating and allowed us to check in at 9 am when she opened on Monday morning even though check in was not until later. She came to our townhouse to point out all of the features that we may need help with and was very nice. The townhouse had a mini-fridge, dishwasher, microwave, stove/oven, dishes, pots, pans, etc, and a combination washer dryer (that was a bit tricky for us Americans!). Overall, the accommodations were great! Would stay there again if staying in the area. There were several good pubs around within walking distance. Durty Nelly's was a favorite. The Creamery was nice, but would not go back to J.P Clarke's (not a traditional Irish pub-more upscale and not what we were looking for). Gallaghers (the seafood restaurant next to JP Clarke's) was nice and with a nice pub atmosphere in the bar area (reservations are necessary though to eat there).

“Don't go there - pay a bit extra or get B&B”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

The hotel obviously has no heating - the rooms are freezing. I was in bed with a hat and scarf. The shower was broken in the room. And there was no hot water.
Although the price appears good - don't be fooled this is too good to be true. The staff may have been friendly but the basics aren't there. On arrival we were told there was no food, the bar was closed by 12 on a Saturday night (if even opened). But above all it was cold cold cold - can't describe how cold it was in the hotel - in the room, in the lobby in the hall.
Don't go - this hotel should not be open it is too cold.

“Cheap and shabby”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2009

The hotel is obviously suffering from the competition across the way but we chose it over the Bunratty Castle Hotel simply because of the price. It was €69 for b&b compared with €99 in the other. The hotel is basic but has all the essentials - tea, coffee, toiletries, tv, double bed (which is refreshing when so many these days are two singles pushed together) but it is falling apart at the seams. Paint was peeling on the bathroom door, part of the bath decor had fallen off, etc. The front of house staff were lovely. There's also a leisure centre with a quaint nod to the neighbouring famous building through castle-shaped light shades at the pool. We went to Durty Nelly's for a riproaring time and a bargainous meal - €25 per person for a four course meal with a bottle of wine thrown in if both of you take it.

“Depressing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2009

Unfortunately we were stuck for somewhere to stay near Shannon for an early morning flight, and my memories of the Shannon Shamrock as a kid in the 70s said "ok, this should be good". Unfortunately didn't have an internet connxn to check tripadvisor before booking.
Overall impression - sleazy and depressing.
Have just looked over the other reviews and more or less the same experience. One thing I didn't see in the others - there was a lampshade over one of the beds which was half held up with sellotape!
Oh dear oh dear.

Foolishly booked the Bunratty Shannon Shamrock as it was near Airport and Folk Park The hotel was once a Fitzpatricks Hotel and hence had some nice whilst outdated decor. We checked in quite late in the evening with the kids. I asked to see the room first and it was a nice size room with some nice features but boy were they sadly neglected. There were pieces of wood apparently nailed to the wall to keep the wall paper together which were coming off and the nails were dangerous. There was a tv which looked about 20 years old, the paint work and skirting was FILTHY The sheets were clean but there was a throw on the bed which looked as it had seen better days (I took it off before kids went to bed to discover the quilt cover didnt cover the quilt properly and sticking out was a old GREY quilt - Yeuch.)
The room was warm so we took off the old bedding and used just the clean sheets.
I went to the bar to check on getting some supper for kids. I passed by a rather large wide whicker waste bin about 2 foot high which was full of empty crisp packets cans rubbish etc, situated by a fireplace in seating area. exploring further the other corridor smelt dreadfully of mould the carpet was shot through and the floor under it uneven. Everywhere was dirty and and unkept. At reception I noticed glass cabinet display of what I was told Blarney woollen mills were in charge of the upkeep and display of and therefore the dirt within and without was not the hotels problem (?!?) There was an old brown box on the reception which had about an inch of dust on it. I was seriously regretting staying at this point but the kids has settled and they had an early start.
Breakfast was served in an extremely filthy dining room/conservatory area.Windows looked like they hadnt been washed inside or out in years. The Bambouri where the food was stored literally had a disgusting thick layer of a black sticky mess covering it.
We checked out rapid and were later told that the place had been closed for some time and that a developer had bought it but its glorious days as a Fitzpatrick Hotel are a dim and distant memory. In my opinion the place needs to be levelled at this stage such is the neglect and dirt. A Developers Dream perhaps but not a place to stay - Health Board workers take note!
