“Well below par”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

I stayed here on a work overnight stay. While the staff were friendly and accommodating, the hotel leaves a lot to be desired. The carpet in the room hadn't seen a vacuum cleaner in long time and the hotel had a grotty feel in general with the exception of the restaurant/breakfast area. The hotel daycor was dated and bathroom was again grotty. The water from the taps could not be consumed even to brush ones teeth and a jug of water was provided to do so. The TV did not have any reception. The WiFi did not work and could only be used in the reception area.

“Good value,great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

Was a little concerned about booking this Hotel as some reviews were negative.Need not have worried.I did ask for 2 rooms in the newer wing and they were excellent-plenty of space and comfortable. Situated in the centre of Ballyvaughan it is easy to abandon the car after great sightseeing in the area and enjoy an evening out in the village.Perfect location for exploring The Burren.Breakfast plentiful and good.

“Dont Think, Just Book It!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2010

I cant sing the praises of Hylands Burren enough.

The room was large, comfortable and clean. The bed was compfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a contunental buffet, breakfast cereals etc. and the full Irish Breakfast, which was substantial!

The staff were very helpful and helped out one day when we were unsure where to visit.

On top of all of this you are in the heart of one of the most picturesque areas of Ireland.

“Lovely room, hearty Irish breakfast and Tea in Fr. Ted's House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

We have been going to Ballyvaughan since the late seventies and have always enjoyed the area and the music. This was our third time in Hylands- the first way back when it was a few rooms over the bar and we stayed in the Walking Lodge last year.
This time around we had a room in the new block and it was large, bright and spotlessly clean with a fine en suite with great water pressure in the shower. There is also a large balcony/smoking area adjacent to the block on the first floor. The rates for August were also excellent at €99 pp for 2 w/end nights BnB.
There were a few minor irritants as in the TV didn't really work properly despite the attentions of a staff member when we asked about it and breakfast service was rather inconsistent due we were told to staff no shows. However the breakfast itself was the real deal including choices like boiled and poached eggs that larger chain establishments have given up on.
The real plus though was that included in the price was tea in Fr. Ted's house.
The House is a pleasant half hour or so drive from the Hotel through some of the most stunning parts of The Burren and is a listed building now being run as an Organic Farm by the McCormacks. There is a shorter route through Corran but beware of local traffic. On arrival we were welcomed warmly by the lady of the house--not Mrs Doyle-and seated a a large table laden with scones, cakes, jams cream and butter and lashings of tea or coffee.

And we did, we did, we did.

Mr. and Mrs.Mac are a mine of information on the locality not to mention what it's like to have seventy or so trucks parked out your back for a few weeks at a time.It should be noted that this is a private house and was used for the exterior shots in the TV series so your'e not going to be able to replicate Bishop Brennan's kick up the A scene or anything like that. All of the interior scenes were shot in studio. However we would heartily recommend the experience and well done to Hylands for coming up with a clever piece of added value in these difficult times.

“Damp bed, mildew and overwhelming musty smell in bedroom”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2010

Great staff. Location excellent, free and accessible parking. Good athmosphere, portions of food good size. Wifi throughout..but not in my bedroom. Had to go out and buy air freshener ( no other rooms available), the bed was not aired, the smell of damp was overwhelming. Great water pressure in shower, bathroom was dated but clean.Flat screen tv with lots of channels including German tv. Comfortable and cozy hotel otherwise. Will return but make sure I get a different room next time.
Breakfast was a bit of a joke, no rashers, no cutlery for cheese or cold meats and the fresh fruit salad, well, most of it came from a tin.
Decent sized mug with fair-trade tea in bedroom.
