“Heaven”

The Green Gate has a magical and timeless quality that sets it apart from the rest of the hectic world. Our room was clean and elegant in its simplicity and felt like a world unto itself. We traveled there off season and loved the wildness of the weather, the wind and the everchanging views of the ocean and surrounding mountains from our bedroom windows. Our breakfasts with the owner,Paul Chatenoud, were simple and delicious, with openhearted conversations that made us love The Green Gate even more.If you are a smoker, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. If you are a non-smoker (which we are),you too will find this private, elegantly rustic place heavenly.

“A Hidden Charm”

I had the pleasure of an overnight stay in this old cottage in autumn 2010. I have to declare very warmly and sincerely that the welcome ,the courtesy , the charm , the conversation and intellect of the host / "fear a 'tí" Paul Chatenoud was an absolute treat. however , paying slightly above the odds for this treat was a bit of a let down when it came to the disappointment of instant coffee and sliced bread served for breakfast. Absolutely amazing location and serenity and astounding views down to the sea. would love to revisit in spring or summertime and smell the expected real coffee brewing , which let's be honest, one would naturally expect from any decent French host and some real bread would also be an honest improvement.

“The Green Gate”

The Green Gate is a wonderful little B&B where Paul Chatenoud will give you the warmest welcome in his beautiful and typical cottage, just above Ardara. The view is just fantastic from the hill where the cottage is. It's no surprise The Green Gate was referred a few times as the best B&B in Ireland. And smokers are more than welcome! The Green Gate is the ideal place to relax and this is also the kind of inspiring place which would make you start writing a novel...

“A magic place...”

We are an italian couple, we stayed at the Green Gate just for one night in August this year...
And that night was magic!!! The sunset in the garden...the small cottage...the blankets...the bath under the stars...
The Green Gate is a place with a heart....the heart and the attention that Paul put in all the small things around you...
And Paul is an inspiring person...that offers his brilliant conversation and....a really good breakfast!!!
We really hope to get back soon....this time as friends!

“A real pleasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

We spent 5 days at Paul's greengate in early Autumn 2011. To say this place is special is an understatement. The location on the top of a hillock over the village of Ardara is superb, and has a view of the distant bay. We stayed in the cottage with the bay view. Paul the proprietor is a pleasure to interact with and was extremely kind. I remember mentioning at breakfast the first day that it would be nice to try real Irish bread. The next morning he'd bought us a loaf. He even ran my laundry through his machine without any extra charge. The place has a charm from centuries-ago, the restoration of the buidings has been done in a very sensitive manner and except for the cars in the car park and perhaps the electricity, you don't feel you're in the 21st or 20th century - a real time capsule.
Paul knows Ardara really well and also the surrounding countryside. There's a lovely old pub in Ardara that has excellent food and drink, particularly oysters. Paul also provided us with some maps and ideas for day trips around. We're both photographers and wanted to explore the surreal landscape of this part of Ireland. What I enjoyed the most staying at the Greengate was the feeling of staying at a friend's (with service of course!). When in the mood I'd just knock on his door and he'd pour us some tea and we'd chat away. It's something you wouldn't get at most hotels - the proprietor's time - a real pleasure.
