“For the price, it's average.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

We stayed here for one night recently and had dinner as well. Our room was a good size, but very warm despite having the windows open. The bedding was quite old, they are still using blankets and the bed cover was a bit grotty. I was annoyed that there was no bottled water in the room, considering that the tap water had a peaty brown colour and taste. Breakfast was a serve yourself affair with rashers, eggs, etc drying out under the heat lamps. The dinner was ok, if again a little overpriced at €45 for a 3 course meal and serve yourself coffee, no petit-fours. If I was in this neck of the woods again, I would either look for much better value in Letterkenny, or much better quality next door.

“Peaceful retreat and a good base for Donegal's wonderful scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

We stayed here for four nights and really enjoyed it. It's a quiet place, about 10 rooms. There's not a lot happens at the hotel, so it will suit those who want quiet and relaxation, but may disappoint people who want something a bit livelier. Dinner is served in the evening, and you can order drinks in the lounge, but otherwise it tends to close up rather early. We arrived from Dublin close to 11 at night, quiet already, but it was no problem for them to rustle up some really good sandwiches.

The room was quaint rather than fancy, but it was spacious and we were pleased with it. The bathroom is a bit small, the shower could be a bit more powerful, but all in all OK. No noticeable noise, good night's sleep. The beds and pillows are a bit on the firm side.

Breakfast was good with very friendly service. However, it is all from buffet, and after a number of mornings a bit of a change would be welcome. We ate at the restaurant on one of the evenings, we were very pleased with the food. Moderate selection of wine, reasonably priced.

The hotel fronts on to Lough Swilly and has its own entrance onto the beach. It's a nice walk down to Rathmullan, and either back by the beach or through the village and along the road. The view on Lough Swilly is very nice. Most of North Donegal is quite accessible from the hotel, and it is wonderful scenery. Best options are to head north to Fanad Head and then west along the coast towards Dunfanaghy; back towards Letterkenny and across to Glenveigh National Park and Errigal; or take the small ferry from Rathmullan to Buncrana and tour the Inishowen Peninsula.

This is a place to relax, and I guess it's all a little understated. It's when you get back on the road that you appreciate the tranquility you have just had, and that Fort Royal is indeed a good place to stay.

“Superb hotel in a stunning location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

This hotel is good for the soul - peaceful, classy and warm. The grounds are fabulous with views through the trees to the beach with the sea and mountains beyond. Rathmullan is a lovely spot. We stayed at the hotel one night and would have stayed several if we could have done. Thoroughly recommended.

“Very relaxing break in a beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay in Fort Royal. The gardens are gorgeous, the sense of peace abounds. The hotel has ideal access to the beach, right at the end of the garden. The view from our room was splendid. Many thanks to Tim and the excellent staff. Looking forward to going back and bringing the family!
