Rathmullan House has been an institution in Donegal tourism for half a century . We had been fairly regular visitors at an earlier time, but had not stayed there for quite a few years. We were interested to see how it measured up to its past reputation, especially now that it has grown significantly bigger with two new wings and a larger dining room.
Some things have not changed. The location is one of the best in ireland, with easy access through excellent grounds to a long sweeping beach with views across Lough Swilly. The hotel is very well kept and very comfortable, with open fires and interesting decor. We had a "standard" double room, and it was spacious and comfortable: some hotels would have passed it off as a junior suite. The food was always a highlight; it is now good rather than outstanding. The menu is less varied than before, and seems to change less from day to day; the dessert menu was especially restricted. But breakfast was excellent.
Rathmullan was always a special experience, and still is. If you have no tbeen there before, then do go: you will not regret it. If, like us, you have memories of what it used to be like then you will probably be a bit disappointed, but I think you will still enjoy it.
