“Poor Service. Very Disappointing...”

This guesthouse is sub-standard. No heating in the rooms, no en-suite bathrooms, no tea/coffee facilities and a complete overreaction from the owners when we complained about these inadequacies.

We arrived after a very long cycle in heavy rain. The rooms were cold and there was no heating until after midnight. We had to share one shower between 5 people. There was no tea or coffee available for us.

After returning from dinner in a local pub, we asked Margaret for a cork screw and were told there was €5 charge. When we complained about this and about the sub-standard accommodation the response from Margaret and Alan was very intimidating. They shouted at us and gestured in an aggressive manner. Very upsetting to two female travelers.

Our initial impression of the house and the rooms was good. This made the sense of disappointed even greater. I would not recommend staying here.

Room Tip: You will get better value and service from any of the smaller B&Bs in the area.

Dear Ms Grennan

In my 18 years in the business of Hospitality I have never met 5 young people so ungrateful and disrespectful of themselves and to myself , my husband and all my other guests who complained of your rudeness - drinking and rowdiness late into the night. If you are going to take the time to sit and write a review please at least be truthful, balanced and fair. You did not mention that your main priority when booking with us was "budget" your budget was €20/25 and you accepted standard rooms ( sharing bathroom) but on arrival you required to get the same service as my other guests who paid double what you did ? how can this be ? in the interest of price fairness ?

Service. I met you all at the door on your arrival - collected all your wet clothes -the wet clothes of 5 persons , took them to my drying room and spent 2 hours "carefully" drying them as cycling gear is delicate and needs a lot attention -all this with no charge, how could you possibly say that you did not get a good service from me ? I am dumbfounded at how ungrateful you could be ? I organised your bikes - your cycling shoes - transport to the village - all again at no charge on a budget rate - we could do no more.

Truthful - please be truthful - our house is not substandard and does have central heating - electric blankets and Tea and Coffee is served in the lounge. ( Please note the central heating is not for drying "cycling shoes" and cycling knapsacks as in your case Ms Grennan) total lack of respect for other peoples property.

I do not accept your review as it is spiteful, unbalanced and unfair. 5 disrespectful young Irish people who make me ashamed to be Irish.

Wonderful stay! Hostess Margaret Brown is very helpful and organized. Great place to relax and enjoy the beach, while being close to Ring of Kerry attractions. Room was clean and beautiful. Best food in the area. Hope we can return someday.

“Exceptionally clean; great variety of breakfast food from gourmet to cold & hot cereal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2011

Margaret & Allan Brown were very accommodating during our whole stay of 12 days; I would recommend this establishment. We choose this B & B for its historical value as the official site for the office of the Transatlantic cables when they were first layed across the ocean. Although the furnishings were more modern day than historical or antiques, we found it to be an excellent value for our euros.

“The Perfect B&B - Strategic Location, Outstanding Hosts, Fantastic Food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 June 2011

We had eagerly looked forward to our stay at The Old Cable Historic House B&B based on its fascinating story and great reviews and certainly weren't disappointed. Our entire stay exceeded our expectations - in fact, we weren't there a few minutes before planning our return visit!

Our room was cozy, spotless and well appointed; our hostess was as warm, friendly and helpful as we could have hoped; and having a private, gourmet restaurant downstairs was extremely convenient. Our meals were truly delicious and FRESH... Our seafood entree was surely swimming only hours before!

This is the perfect stopping place for the Skellig Islands, Skellig Experience and Valentia Island. Picturesque scenery, quaint farm and fishing villages and close to a direct road to Killarney. Avoid the crowds and tour buses and enjoy your Ring of Kerry visit in peace!

“A nice B&B with a friendly host”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

We stayed at this B&B one night on our drive around the Ring of Kerry. Waterville was a good choice as there were pubs and restaurants and a nice walk along the waterfront of the town (some other towns on the Ring seemed quite spread out and without a 'centre' as such). Margaret greeted me by my first name before I even introduced myself and she was very friendly and offered us local advice. It was very quiet during our midweek stay and there was only one other couple staying (in this B&B, and the whole town it seemed!) so we got a good sleep. The room was cosy and generally clean, and the electric blanket was nice! The only negatives for us were the lack of a TV in the room and the white cotton curtains which let all the early morning sunshine through!
