“A comfy cottage right out of Beatrix Potter's world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2010

We spent 4 nights in the self-catering cottage at Railway Lodge. We were greeted with tea and scones in the common room of the main lodge which gave us time to unwind before settling into the cottage. The rooms were comfortable and decorated beautifully -- like living in Beatrix Potter's world. The kitchen is small but well equipped. Carmel provided home-made bread, fruit, yogurt and other treats. The view from the living room was stunning and the sunset over the mountains breathtaking. The bathroom was spacious and the shower always hot. The bed was the most comfortable one of our 4 weeks in Ireland. The bedroom has two skylights and on several nights the sky was clear and the stars were magnificent. Due to hurricane winds and rain, we stayed in one day and enjoyed several of the choice films available in the extensive DVD collection. Such a comfortable way to escape the storm. The location is ideal for touring Connemara and Galway. We'd return in a minute!

“The railway lodge was charming, our best stay in Ireland.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2010

We felt at home as soon as we arrived at the Railway Lodge. Carmel has decorated her comfortable home with lovely antiques. A classy change from the Irish lace.
Our rooms were immaculate with top quality linens in a comfortable bed.
Breakfast was included and all ingredients were fresh. We spent the rest of our stay in Ireland looking for a Irish breakfast bread as good as Carmel's and we didn't find it.
Oughterard was a pleasure to visit. Enjoy your stay.

“Quiet and Restful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

This B&B is off the beaten path. It is quiet and restful with a friendly and helpful owner. The grounds are lovely. You could relax in the sun room and look up to see beautiful flowers.

“Our favorite stay in western Ireland!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2010

I can't say enough about this B&B (not sure why it is listed in hotel group, it's really a B&B)! This was our favorite stay during our trip to western Ireland, and by far the least expensive of the places we stayed. It is a great location from which to explore other areas on day trips. When you return from your junkets, you feel like you've come back home. Carmel is so nice; she makes you feel like you've known her for years! And she's loaded with information! Sometimes we feel wary of staying in a B&B with our young children (7 & 10 when we stayed last year). But we were made to feel welcome and at home. We loved her dog too since we were missing ours. The inn is on beautiful grounds with lovely vistas. It's only a 5-min walk to the river to watch the salmon jump, which we all LOVED, especially the kids. The rooms are cozy and nicely decorated with Irish pine. She served us yummy breakfasts (perhaps our best in Ireland) in her living room. It was cozy, cheery and wonderful to have a home-cooked meal. Her breads are to die for - all home-made! Oughterard could use some new restaurants, but Carmel was very honest about the selection and helped us plan our evenings as well as our drives to County Mayo and Dublin. Well, I could go on & on, but this inn is so delightfully unique and one of our favorite Ireland memories. Wish I could go back now!

“One of the best holidays ever!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2009

I was there with my husband and teenage children for a week, we had the best time ever, Carmel was so nice! There was loads to do! We walked and cycled every day. We also went on a fab boat trip on the Corrib! We walked our dogs by the old railway track next to the Lodge. At the waterfall near the Lodge, we watched Salmon jumping. It was really amazing! The weather was appalling but that didn't dampened our spiriits in fact it only added to the enjoyment of a big open fire and a delious dinner served up by Carmel every night. Breakfast is a marathon affair, crisp white linen, fresh fruits, delious
yogurt and devine home baking.
