“Still good after all these years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

My wife and I had promised to return after spending one night on our honeymoon. It took us 35 years (virtually to the day) to get around to it and we weren't disappointed. From the initial call the experience was as we recalled – relaxed, courteous and welcoming. This time it Hodgson Junior (Henry) who was our host and he maintains the grace and ability we associated with his parents – a very good host. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, ate well and made new acquaintances – a good mix. We won't take another 35 years . . .

“A taste of a manor estate living”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

Just what we were looking for--a private setting and amazing hospitality. Situated on the shores of Lough Corrib and 150 acres of private forest, it is a place to do some serious relaxing. Henry, the owner/bar tender/waiter/everything else welcomes you to his family estate and encourages you to enjoy all it's amenities. High tea is a daily event, and it's homemade cakes and tea which is served in the drawing room. Our room was very comfy and overlooked the grounds. Henry arranged fishing for my husband, and his boat left from the guest house. He even cooked the trout he caught and served it to the guests at breakfast. They have a gourmet dining room, with excellent food and service, which you won't find in town. Connemara is a beautiful area, so stop and visit for awhile.

We've driven up to equally grand looking houses and been disappointed with the detail but from the moment we were greeted by owner and host, Henry, we were pretty sure we were on to a winner. And so it proved to be. Everything about this place exudes character (in a good way) from the furnishings to the owners to the staff and to the tiger rug! It's not perfect but it's perfectly charming. It's cosy, it's warm and welcoming. There's space to spread your map out by the fire or slump back in your armchair with a glass of red and a book. Our fellow guests were all very friendly, in part I am sure, because everone was so relaxed. The food is delightful and was such a welcome respite from the pub grub we had availed ourselves of on too many occassions on our recent trip. Unfortunately we were always out and about and never had the opportunity to have afternoon tea which is our only regret of our stay. If it wasn't 18000km's away we would use that as an excuse to return.
Currarevagh is the quintessential country house - the kind of stay we were hoping to find more of in Ireland but didn't. You eat well, sleep well and socialize well - perhaps it is perfect.

Room Tip: pay the extra and get the front/corner room.

“Exceptional Hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

Two hundred years of family ownership mean that a tradition of hospitality makes this more akin to being invited to a private country house stay than being 'paying guests'. The Hodgsons ensure that from the complimentary tea (with superb home made cakes) to the gourmet cuisine from Lucy served under the watchful eye of Henry (no relation) everything runs to the highest standards. A very special place to stay and June Hodgson is a very special person.

Room Tip: Choose a corner room with views over the lake

“Perfect, in every way”

We just got our visit in before the end of the season, but we'll be back. The best hospitality we've experienced in a long time. Perfectly-pitched for relaxation: comfy beds, breakfast when we were ready for it, textbook afternoon tea, wonderful dinner and great company of fellow guests. Could have stayed for ever...
