“A little Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

We arrived at this hotel on a friday night we checked out on Monday after breakfast. When we ararived at around 8pm there was a sign at the main entrance to enter via bar, We did this & we were checked in by a nice young gentleman. We asked about food but we were told restaurant was closed for winter, That was not a problem as the bar was open & we would get breakfast in the morning. The room was nice & warm & there was nice fresh bed linen & towels. There was a small TV. Tea Coffee making facilities & also a Hairdryer in the room. We had a drink at the bar which was also nice & cosy. It was like old world charm this hotel was. Very cosy & warm & friendly staff. We had breakfast the following morning & it was freshly prepared in the kitchen, there were cereals & juices on the buffet table. Thebreakfast was lovely & was very well presented . The lady that served us was very nice and homely. The hotel was very quiet I would say that we were nearly the only people in the hotel. We left a note on the bed for extra Coffee & Shampoo & this was given to us when we arrived back to the hotel after our day shopping in Galway City. We ate out both nights at the local village a bar called Breathnachs & I have to say this was a great place to eat, food was very good & very well priced. We will definitely come back to this hotel maybe when the season is busier as then maybe the restaurant would be open for dinner. We would love also if they had WIFI as it was very hard to get a good signal.Well done to the staff & we will recommend this lovely hotel for their friendliness & homeliness. Well done.

“Homily atmosphere with very pleasant staff”

We stayed here for the October Bank Holiday and had a great weekend. Although the hotel could do with a bit of refurbishment it was warm and had a lovely coal fire lighting in the foyer each day. The evening meals were first class and there was a great choice on the menu. Breakfast was lovely and the staff most helpful. Our room was really warm with lots of hot water for showers. The function room was lovely with a maple floor for dancing, which we did each evening. Entertainment was terrific but there does seem to be a problem with the toilets attached to the hall as the floor was flooded each evening in the ladies. When the planned refurbishment is complete it will be a very nice hotel but I hope it doesn't loose its lovely atmosphere.

Thank you for your comments. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and more so the music and dancing. We agree with your comments that the hotel has a nice homely atmosphere. We are very proud of our staff all of which come from the local area. Most of which have fluent Irish.
Glad you liked the open fire in the foyer incidentally it was burning turf / peat not coal which was saved from the local bogs.
The ladies toilet water leak has been traced to a faulty cistern which was intermittent and the problem has now been rectified. The leak affected 2 out of the 4 cubicles however a further block of toilets were available at the other end of the hall.
Refurbishment. We have planning permission to refurbish and extend the hotel which will be carried out on a rolling basis.

“Definetly not a 3 star Hotel”

Stayed in The Connemara gateway on the 11th September as were attending the Mike Denver Dance that night, the hotel is extemely old fashioned and Dirty looking, the Receptionist didnt even bother informing us breakfast times upon check-in. The rooms are very basic and old fashioned in order to get a socket to charge the mobile phone you need to plug out he TV. The food in the bar was pretty ok we eat there on the saturday evening. For anyone interested in Dancing i would not recommend this venue at all, the function room is the leisure centre converted to faciltate dancing it has a bad layout and a terrible quality floor, even if you a resident in the hotel you still need to go outside to get into the function room. The Toilet floor were swimming in water and were quiet slippy. I have attend these Bands in a number of venues and have to say this was the worst to date. The Breakfast the following morning was a complete disgrace the was no choice available and it was self service there was no Mushrooms the scrambled eggs was dried out and stuck to the dish the beans were glued to the spoon from sitting under a red lamp from proberly 7 that morning, the sausages were dried and hard it was totally unacceptable, the only thing i would eat was the toast. A number of other residents were complaing about the terrible breakfast on sunday morning. when we complained upon checking out where we told to email the hotel upon doing that i got a very unplesant email back . All in all i would say stay clear you have been warned.

Thank you for your comment.
It seems rather strange that out of 350 people who attended the Mike Denver function that we receive a complaint of such magnitude from just 1 person.
The hotel sells bedrooms on a Per Person rate and not a Room Rate and we note that you enquired as to how many beds were in a single occupancy bedroom.

We do not accept your criticism of the breakfast or the criticism of the reception staff in relation to breakfast time information. Your guest bedroom offers a further Information Booklet.

Your criticisms of the function room are unfounded. The bad floor that you refer to is in fact a new sprung solid maple dance floor. We have received wonderful comments about the design, lighting and acoustics of the function room. Please feel free to ask any of the bands who have played here including Mike Denver for their opinions.

Perhaps the function room with it's unique design is a bit too futuristic for you.

Happy Dancing!

“RUBBISH!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

Up at 4am, flew into Dublin, drove to west coast, after long day needed somewhere to stay. oh my god, wish we had continued driving!! ... Old, smelly, looks like a carehome, rooms SO SO tired and run down, condensation between double glazing, bathroom suite was shabby, rubbish receptionon on TV (if you could see the TV as it was so small). Went to bar to eat, asked what sandwiches they did and was told I could have anything i liked, unfortunately they didn't know what an avocado was, when I asked for Tuna they didn't have any and when I asked for Cheese and Pickle they ... guess what? ... didn't have any!! ... asked for cheese and ham WITHOUT tomato which duly arrived WITH tomato and then had the chicken wings (which they did have) but they also came with feathers attached, woke up in morning to no hot water in hotel (was offered a bowl of hot water (how nice) and ended up using the kettle in our room!. Decided to try the breakfast, mmmmm ....... coffee was stewed, eggs had dried out under the hot plate lights, chef was wearing a baseball cap and dirty whites and the receptionist looked like she was about to ride a horse given the boots she was wearing, To finish of our wonderful 1 night stay my girlfriend was asked by another guest if they served porridge. Cearly no one knows who actually works in the hotel!! ..... They also appear to have lost some of their flags as there are 3 flagpoles with only the stars and stripes of America flying!! ...... well at least we managed to negoatiate the price down by 50%!!

We are a traditional 3 Star Hotel noted for its homely atmosphere and character. We don't pretend to be a Dorchester or Hilton Hotel. We do not accept your criticism which has been grossly fabricated.

We pride ourselves on our hospitality and Irish welcome and it is sad when someone like you takes a dislike to a person because of their footwear. And speaking about the flag poles there are 4 not 3 and we were also wondering where the flags might have gone!

Perhaps next time you will stay in a 5 Star and try your luck for a 50% discount.

Good luck!

“Great Value for money hotel in Connemara”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

30 of us stayed here on our fishing trip to the west. The fishing was great and the location was excellent. We also did a tour of connemara and the location was perfect for this.

The hotel itself was a little dated but the friendliness and the old world character of the place more than made up for it. I guess it adds to the charm of the place.

The food was excellent and the rooms were clean. The staff were friendly and it was good value for money compared to the rest of galway.

Overall a great stay

Thank you for your nice comments. It's nice to know that you have taken time out to let the world know that you and your group got good value for money and enjoyed your stay here at The Connemara Gateway Hotel.

We agree the location of the hotel is excellent with the best fishing in Europe on our doorstep, great golf courses and the magical scenery of Connemara.

We believe we do provide good value for money and are always happy to accommodate club societies, coach tours etc. Our hard working local Irish staff are always pleased to look after your needs.

Thank you again for choosing to stay with us.
