“Will not be returning!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a friendly receptionist. The bar staff/night porter were also very friendly and helpful! The rooms were clean however they are outdated and the windows were in need of a good clean! When I got up in the morning I went for a shower and discovered that the water was stone cold:(! The foyer and corridors are also in need of refurbishment! Overall we were not impressed with the hotel but the staff were very nice!

“Worn and jaded, staff lacking skill or experience”

We stayed here on a Saturday night when rooms in the greater Galway area were at a premium due to raceweek. Given that this hotel had no problem with availability, we should have been wary, but after 4 hours in the car, we opted to stay.
In summary, bedroom while clean was drab and dull and badly needed a makeover. A sign outside the hotel advertised 'live music tonight' but not so! Pint of Guinness was good and staff were friendly but patently inexperienced - bar was quite yet a table was left with dirty dishes.
Breakfast was really poor in that Irish fry up self served from buffet was cold, toast took forever to be delivered - again by friendly, warm but inexperienced staff.
Overall, a pity that given the good location near the lakes, rivers and Connemara National Park, this hotel is best avoided!

“As friendly as expected, but unfortunately dated”

I felt compelled to write a review of this establishment, on account of a mixed experience. Having been booked to stay on a business trip, I was not in a position to explore the local area, but am certain that the hotel is in a fantastic location.

I was made to feel welcome, always greeted with a smile and very helpful staff. However, it is interesting to read the Management's brazen defence of certain aspects of the hotel on other reviews on this site. I'm afraid it's nigh impossible to defend the breakfast offering. While the selection of juices was admirable, over the course of the week I had to unpeel cling film from cereal containers and mix my own instant coffee, was denied honey, and a poached egg as the chef didn't know how to cook one, and had to skip the meal altogether on one day because one poor lad was expected to serve a coach-load queue of 30 tourists at once! A bit of warning about this the night before would have been sensible.

With regard to the rooms, for 'homely' read 'dated'. As comfortable as my stay was, it's a fact that the bedrooms need modernising. The area around the radiator looked impossible to keep clean and the TV was worthless. I eventually found the remote control, actually behind the bedside table, but gave up watching due to poor reception and the tiny screen. Everything worked in the bathroom, but the shower was circa 1980, the toilet was not clean, and the unusual situation arose of some empty toiletries-packaging being removed from the bin and re-positioned on the sink-top. I'm afraid this cannot be considered hygienic.

I make these points not in order to complain, for I would have done so to the staff had this trip been for pleasure, but in order to let prospective visitors know of my experience, and to give the Management a chance to address certain issues. I would like to re-iterate that at all times the staff were most pleasant and welcoming.

“Awful, awful, awful.”

We stayed at this 'hotel' with 2 young children for 2 nights. Arrived and were initially ignored by the receptionist. Not a promising start. We had specifically requested a family room, having booked 2 months prior to staying and were assured that an inter-connecting family room had been reserved for us - not so. We were given a room with 1 double bed and 2 travel cots right beside the bed. We had advised that we have 2 toddlers - not babies. The staff were so rude when we initially brought this fact to their attention, we were made to feel that we were putting them out. We would not have 1 positive thing to say about this establishment and could go on and on about all the negative things we experienced, but won't, will only say that we will never, ever stay here again.

“A little Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

We arrived at this hotel on a friday night we checked out on Monday after breakfast. When we ararived at around 8pm there was a sign at the main entrance to enter via bar, We did this & we were checked in by a nice young gentleman. We asked about food but we were told restaurant was closed for winter, That was not a problem as the bar was open & we would get breakfast in the morning. The room was nice & warm & there was nice fresh bed linen & towels. There was a small TV. Tea Coffee making facilities & also a Hairdryer in the room. We had a drink at the bar which was also nice & cosy. It was like old world charm this hotel was. Very cosy & warm & friendly staff. We had breakfast the following morning & it was freshly prepared in the kitchen, there were cereals & juices on the buffet table. Thebreakfast was lovely & was very well presented . The lady that served us was very nice and homely. The hotel was very quiet I would say that we were nearly the only people in the hotel. We left a note on the bed for extra Coffee & Shampoo & this was given to us when we arrived back to the hotel after our day shopping in Galway City. We ate out both nights at the local village a bar called Breathnachs & I have to say this was a great place to eat, food was very good & very well priced. We will definitely come back to this hotel maybe when the season is busier as then maybe the restaurant would be open for dinner. We would love also if they had WIFI as it was very hard to get a good signal.Well done to the staff & we will recommend this lovely hotel for their friendliness & homeliness. Well done.
