First, let me say that we stayed in 2 lovely guesthouses while in Ireland - Waterloo House in Dublin and Virginia's in Kenmare. Maybe our expectation that B&Bs in Ireland are like B&Bs in the US were incorrect, I don't know, but this was not what we expected.
I agree with other reviews that John is friendly and outgoing, but I can't say the same for his wife - we saw her 2 times and she never more than nodded. The first time, John was showing us around, he waved in her direction, said she was his wife (she was curled up on the sofa watching Judge Judy and talking on the phone and never looked up ), and we went out to the patio. The view was lovely; unfortunately, the pool was very dirty; and the dog, Cindy, although affectionate and sweet, stank terribly. (And we have a golden retriever of our own.) Our rooms and bath were clean but the rest of the house didn't look as clean and smelled like curry.
At this point, we should have said thank you and left, but it was very ackward and I wasn't sure whether or not we would be required to pay for the night anyway since we had booked ahead. These things are easier at a hotel where it's not quite as personal. Anyway, we decided to stick it out.......
When we came back from dinner, there was no place to hang out but our rooms. (The family was watching TV in the living room and we felt like intruders.) We were thankful for this a few minutes later because a heated "discussion" broke out about curfew and whether or not the teenage daughter should go to college. Now, as a parent of a 17 & 19 year old, I can tell you that I have had these same arguments with them myself. However, I didn't appreciate being subjected to it while on vacation and paying good money for the privilege. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights, but decided then and there to leave the next morning asap.
When I went to find John to tell him we were leaving (about 7:30 AM), I found him in the kitchen in his robe with no noticeable PJs underneath -- talk about unsettling! Thankfully, he didn't question our leaving and didn't charge us for the second night (maybe this wasn't the first time?).
All in all, this was something we won't likely forget and will talk about for years to come!
