“"Grand" hotel in a lovely setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I stayed for the weekend with a group of friends - our annual "book club" outing! Unfortunately we weren't able to upgrade to rooms with the fabulous view - it was Valentine's weekend - but they were very comfortable and spacious. (A complimentary bottle of water would have been a welcome addition to the tea/coffee making facilities...)

As our package included a meal, we ate in Coast Restaurant one evening - and while the service was very, very slow to begin with, the food was excellent when it eventually was served. Breakfast was as expected - standard hotel mix of hot and cold breakfast buffet, but it did take forever to get much needed coffee!

Minor issues won't stop us returning though - the staff were very friendly and a great weekend was had by all!

“Most Expensive Cup of Coffee”

I stepped into Malahide for a Business meeting on 8th February and had some time to kill beforehand. I called into the Grand Hotel - a nice looking hotel - and plush lobby, surroundings and location. I sat in the Lobby area reading some work material and laptop open in a lounge chair and table - I asked at reception if I could get a coffee - was told to go to the bar myself for it.
I packed up my laptop and reading material in the lobby and moved to the bar. I ordered a coffee. Served with a smile and pleasant staff.
Wi-fi reception was good in the lobby - but poor in the bar.
After the coffee - I went to pay at the bar - and was astounded - to be asked for - not €2, not €2.50, not €2.75, not even a massive €3 for a cup (not mug but cup of coffee). It was more than 3.20, 3.30 or 3.40-.
Yes - the charge for a Cup of Coffee - is €3.50.
The poor staff were apologising about the price of it.

It really is the biggest rip-off for a coffee I have paid in a Bar in Ireland.
I was planning on arranging to meet the business colleague in the Hotel - where we would have had coffee followed by lunch - but at the price charged for coffee -
I made a quick exit - arranign to meet elsewhere in Malahide and will defineately Not be coming back to the hotel again. That price for a coffee - does not say "Welcome" to its guests.

“A wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I planned a surprise dinner party for my husband's birthday with 22 family and friends joining us. We had booked 11 rooms and booked dinner in The Coast Restaurant for the evening. The hotel staff were so helpful, nothing was a bother to them. We were treated so well, an area off the main lobby was roped off and reserved for the guests to wait to surprise my husband when he arrived, they printed special menus with birthday greetings at the top, the meal was excellent as was the service, we were also given a room upgrade. Everyone in our party was so impressed with the hotel. I would highly recommend it and will be returning again.

“Irish Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I used to stay at this hotel very frequently while on business in the Dublin area so it became a bit of a home-away-from-home for me. The entrance is very impressive and I love the different sitting rooms throughout that are so typical of these older hotels. The rooms can vary a lot, so make sure you request one in the newer, renovated part of the hotel. These ones are perfect - clean and very modern. There are some older ones in the hotel that definitely could use some work. The restaurant has spectacular views over the harbour in Malahide, but save it for the breakfast buffet (the breakfast staff are so kind!) or a special occasion. For dinner, I would recommend the hotel bar if you want to go casual because the food is actually really great there; otherwise, there's a wonderful little seafood restaurant just a 5 minute walk from the hotel called the Seabank Bistro that I would highly recommend!

You can easily explore Malahide just by walking from the hotel, and there's a very nice coastal path that starts right outside the hotel door. There's also a great gym that you can access from the hotel - it is a local gym (not just a hotel gym) so it's got the full set of machines, classes, very nice pool etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the "new/recently renovated" section.
