Coill an Róis, or "Forest of the Roses" for the rest of us, is a wonderful B&B located in what many consider to be the most scenic area of Ireland. Several kilometers outside of Dingle, the great strength of the place is its owner Jimmy Bruic, who welcomes new and returning guests as if they're members of his family. He might even joke that he treats his guests better than family.
My first stay there I was greated with warm tea and biscuits, and had the pleasure of sitting in a living room common area with other guests, including some hikers from other parts of Europe staying for the night, a not-uncommon experience in that part of the country. The common area is a great way to relax and meet a diverse group of friendly people, if you so desire.
I was traveling with a friend and both our rooms were clean, spacious and meticulously kept, with their own private showers that were as large as any I saw during my trips through Ireland. The types of guests while we were staying ranged from several couples, two groups of friends, and a couple of hikers, equally split between males and females, with the ages of the guests ranging from twenties through their sixties. There were Americans, Irish citizens staying for the weekend, and others from Germany and Italy. All in all, a friendly group of people. The rates are quite reasonable as the B&B is just outside of town.
Your host Jimmy is a chef by trade. I mention that because his breakfasts are tremendous and will get you going as you head out on a day of touring. He's more than happy to give you suggestions on places to visiit and directions on how to start your journey.
A couple of logistical notes: If you're looking for a B&B right in the middle of town, then Coill an Róis is probably not for you, but if you're open to being just outside of Dingle (a quick ten minute car ride) and staying at a B&B that offers the quiet and charm of the Irish countryside with easy access to Slea Head and the Dingle Peninsula, then by all means make Coill an Róis your destination. One stay and you will probably make it a regular stop when you return to Dingle again. (I plan yet another return in 2012.) Just be prepared on your very first drive to the B&B to have a moment of "I must be lost" when you hang a right off the main road (it's marked by a sign for the B&B) and travel down what seems to be a hidden road. Just as your questioning your direction, you'll see the lovely pink house that will be your home away from home, Coill an Róis. Last, Jimmy usually spends winter in the America, so the B&B shuts down for a few months in December through usually March, reopening spring through fall. If you don't receive a response right away to your email during the winter it's probably because he's away.
I highly recommend Coill an Róis (Forest of the Roses). It's a warm place that you'll no doubt be recommending to other visitors.
Room Tip: It's a B&B, so there's no swimming pool or fitness center, although I did see a hot tub...
