We arrived late at night and finding no one at Reception, tracked down the staff in the bar where were told that our room (only one available) was outdoors at the rear of the pub. So unassisted and armed with our luggage we trecked around a poorly lit 30 room complex in the dark, that consisted of a series of separate concrete blocks looking more like lock-up garages than hotel accommodation set amongst several randomly parked cars and overgrown conifers. We considered ourselves lucky it wasn't raining and having eventually located our room, found it cold, dimly lit and clammy with the central heating turned off. It was indeed drab, the decor was tired and it the felt more like of being somewhere in eastern Europe back in the 50's. TV reception was poor, even on BBC1 and the picture quaility faded from time to time. The bathroom fittings were loose and shower was well used. On the positive side, the hot water was 'hot' and the breakfast was well cooked. The room where breakfast was served was dark with lots of brown/black woodwork and decor in a style that is now very dated with mock beams and 'fablon' panelling pasted on the walls. The atmosphere was not inviting, made worse for us by piped music and mindless chatter from Radio 2 in the back ground. In all it was the worst ever experience we have ever endured and felt very sorry for the other guests and were glad to leave the place. We wondered, however, just what foreign visitors would have thought of British hospitality had this been their only experience. At £60, in our view it represented very poor value and in summary - the place 'is best avoided'.
