We were in the UK to have a family week with our blended family, so we decided to stay at the Portland Hotel as they can accommodate 3 children each in their own beds. Hubby also liked the fact that it's a Wetherspoons as he's only ever had positive things to say about that pub. We arrived early but they had no problem letting us take our stuff up and settle in. Debbie showed us the beds and offered to make up the trundle bed for the two little ones, but we said we'd do it no problem.
We were in room 101. Granted some of the stuff could use an update but really it is not that bad. It is very clean and tidy. The bathroom was fine for our needs, and spacious. The bed WAS very comfy. Each of the children slept well and comfortably. None of the things mentioned about noise from the pub were an issue. We were there a week - every once in awhile you could hear someone coming or going but that was it. Really was very quiet.
There were 3 hardworking staff there every day working long hours, but they were absolutely brilliant - Debbie, a woman and a man. The Gentleman always asked when would be best to make up our room and he always joked with the kids and gave them biscuits everyday, and made sure our water was well stocked. There are no extra charges for these things, which is brilliant! They would have smiles and pleasant greetings whether it was first thing or late at night.
We ate in the Wetherspoons almost exclusively because it's just so reasonable, and has a great kids' menu with pencils and activities for them to do. They submitted so many pictures to the bar! I fear they will DEFINITELY be remembered, especially the 5 year old with the funny, loud, slightly lispish Canadian accent! But everyone all the way down the line was patient with them and always had a smile, even the "regulars" in there with their pints at 9 in the morning!
The market was wonderful! We got fruit each day and enjoyed the Thursday market especially. The pathways around the market and town are just a joy, and specifically pedestrian. Don't miss the crooked Spire.
Midweek we had a bit of a disaster with our rental car. Suffice to say it caused a lot of stress for us both and put a damper on our vacation and all our plans. But Debbie came to the rescue in fine style; she could see we were just about at wits' end and went above and beyond to find us a replacement car, telling us to just go feed the children and she would look for an agency. She ran down to the pub with good news and said she could take Hubby in to Sheffield to get a new car. This she did with grace and humour. It made all the difference her doing that.
It made a very stressful situation a lot better, and once we got past the little "blip" we recovered our week.
We would stay there again. And we wish all those fine folk all the best.
Highly highly highly recommend. And thank you all so much for your kind words when we were melting down. It was a memorable time and the children (and us) will never forget it!!
Room Tip: 101 was alright but isn't the "picturesque" side of the hotel. However, it may be a bi...
