“Nice homely hotel - service seemed all a bit too much to give”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

Stayed in room 1. Lovely room and very comfy - if a little squeaky - bed. Bathroom a bit shabby and tired though. The disappointment was when asking for lunch - or a drink a fraction late... the default answer seemed to be a grudging yes... I'll ask the chef - or ok, but you can only have one drink. We got what we wanted but were left feeling that we shouldn't have asked and that we were putting people out.
Fair enough I suppose but just didn't feel very valued.
Would we stay again? - probably, just.

Room Tip: Go superior - the rooms are definitely worth it...

“Shabby but still good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

The rooms are looking in need of TLC. Our bathroom had paint peeling off the walls but was otherwise a lovely room. Having said that the location is superb, the atmosphere in the public rooms is good and the English breakfast is one of the best we have had. we would still stay here again.

well it was our second visit to the swan hotel our first was three years ago we stayed in room 8 , a beautiful large room with a bathroom almost as big, the food was faantastic and at 140 for the room and a big selection for breakfast it was the reason we decided to return.
And wow what a dissapointment .we were given room 12 ,a large darkly painted room overlooking the car park . it was ok but not ideal, the bathroom was tiny, after walking around the city of bath for six hours we both fancied a long soak in a hot bath,,,,,,,ohhh were we in for a supprise NO HOT WATER,,after numerous times of asking and being told to wait an hour for it to heat up ,a chap came and turned on the water and told us what we already knew ...SORRY NO HOT WATER . USE THE SHOWER. well that would be better than nothing and thats what we got nothing NO HOT WATER, just a tepid shower.after complaining again we were given a discount and a bottle of wine, not the best result but better than nothing. the evening meal was good and a good nights sleep followed.
breakfast was nothing like the first visit, trying to be to upmarket ,the full english was delicately stacked up on a plate 1egg 1 bacon 1 sausage(not farm fresh ,,,walls more like)
1 mushroom (yes 1) and a piece of black something not the best breakfast ever,
So all in all not a good second visit ,my advice to the owners is get back to basics dont be clever, you have a nice place . so if you are thinking of visiting the area look around,we will. sorry swan

Room Tip: room 8 £140 but check hot water before you unpack

“Charming old hotel but very scruffy in parts”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

First of all the hotel is in a fantastic location right by the river. First impressions are of a faded, tired exterior but inside there is a certain charm to the ground floor bar area, with a large central bar with open fireplace and smaller rooms off.
The problems start in the bedroom. Ours was a small double on the top floor, dominated by a large modern pine coloured wardrobe totally out of keeping with the dark stained wooden beams and general character of the hotel. The bathroom was terrible with peeling wallpaper and an extractor fan which did not work. With no natural ventilation this meant when showering the room was filled with steam which perpetuated the wallpaper issue. There were also pollyfiller repairs visible on the wall which added to the general scruffy feel of the room. On the plus side the bed was very comfortable and linen was of a decent quality. Other small points which rankled were no ability to lock the window and sticky breakfast tables. Cleanliness was ok but the extremities were clearly not cleaned regularly at all as I found when retrieving a coin from under the bed. Wifi didn't work in the room which was blamed on the building but this could easily be rectified with more routers or booster points. Staff were a mixed bag, ranging from friendly and helpful to curt and indifferent.
Breakfast was ok but the buffet was a bit thin with the fruit looking particularly dishevelled and no sign of any croissants despite being offered on the menu.
Overall you pay for location here, the hotel looks and feels decidedly scruffy.

“First appearance can be deceiving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Making our way from the car park to the reception our initial impression was had we made a mistake. The hotel was an old building and showing its age. A slight hiccup as no trace of our booking could be found but a room was made available. We found our bedroom to be clean and of sufficient size. Bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in with good quality bedding. Complimentary bottled water provided. Bathroom was huge with, freestanding bath and a spacious shower cubicle.
Evening meal was excellent. Bar area had a cosy feel. Breakfast was very good.
We only had an overnight stay but the location was excellent for a post meal stroll through an historic town.
Only negative comment I would make is if you have a room facing the front don't expect a lie in in the morning. The traffic was extremely intrusive with dust cart loading bottles at 7.30am and the early morning commuter traffic creating lots of noise. No problem in the evening or night as once the workers have gone home the town is quite.
Staff very friendly
