This is an absolute gem of a garden designed and created by the legendary Harold Peto and which has been lovingly nursed back to near perfection by the resident Hignett Family.
It has everything from wondrous mature trees, genuine italianate buildings, statues, ponds and grand terraces flanked by inspirationally planted borders. The river Frome passes close by and the entire garden is built into a steep wooded hillside and on a summers evening with the sun setting in the west there is no more beautiful place to be.
High quality refresments are usually available and during the summer ther is a programme of some 25 evenings of opera, performed in the round in the classically beautiful Cloister, and at least three evenings of remarkable jazz when usually at least two groups perform alternately. Picnicking in the garden is the order of the day on these occasions and is to be highly recommended. and make no mistake. the opera is of the highest possible international quality and if you have a musical bone in your body you will be blown away by the highly intimate experience of being in an audience of no more than 90 persons and having the mainly young performers sing and act their hearts out to you within touching distance. A unique and truly joyful memorable experience.
