We stayed at the Cow Byre 2 self-catering cottage. It was a very comfortable cottage for a family of four, in a delightful setting, with a good games room and some animals for the children. It is not a working farm. It seems to be surrounded by arable rather than pastoral farms, so we weren't besieged by the smells that can be associated with pastoral farms. On other rural stays the nausea from animal odours has made it impossible for me to enjoy food or especially wine.
The games room is wonderful for the kids, with ping pong, pool, table football, badminton, football, volleyball, and numerous board games. There is an outdoor area outside the games room where adults can relax.
The 'adult room' is in the loft of the cottage, and this has the potential to be very hot. We stayed in August, but we were lucky to have very mild weather, and we were comfortable. If you had real summer weather, the upstairs room could be stifling. An air cooler was provided, which could conceivably have helped, but in the past I have not found air coolers to be useful in very uncomfortable conditions.
The area does not have a lot of light pollution, and so you can have an amazing view of the night sky. We had two nights of fabulous star views.
There are many places to visit within a short drive,e.g. Longleat, Bath, Lacock. Lacock is fabulous for Harry Potter fans. It also has good places to eat. Longleat is expensive but has a lot to offer. If you buy using your Tesco vouchers it isn't so hard on the pocket.
Bradford-on-Avon itself is a pretty little town that apparently has several good places to eat (we didn't eat there). It is a short walk for adults but a bit tiring for children. There is a barbed wire gate that poses some challenges for young children (my youngest daughter was snared on it).
It is convenient for Bath, only a short rail journey away (20 mins by memory?).
The proprietors are friendly and they provide some excellent goodies for your arrival (yummy fudge, local clotted cream and cookies etc).
I would go back and would encourage others to stay here.

Dear IHumprey,
Thank you for taking the time to write such an in depth review which I am sure will be very helpful to other guests looking to come to visit our area.
We are pleased that you explored the area so thoroughly and made the best of your time in the local area.
At the Beeches we don't have any gates with wire on it and wonder if it is on the way to Bradford on Avon. Th e field between us and BOA is occasionally used for holding sheep so wire on gates maybe needed during that time.
Guest who have stayed during hot weather have found the air coolers efficient .
We do hope that you will come to stay again as there is still much to do, you could try looking on www.vistwiltshire.co.uk for ideas on their great days out guide and like wise www.visitbath.co.uk
Thank you for coming to stay with us and look forward to welcoming you again at the Beeches and Pig Wig Cottages.
Kind Regards
Pauline.
