I am decidedly torn about the Georgian Lodge, mainly because it's a place of stark contradictions; On one hand it is a wonderful period building, full of old-world charm and character, but on the other hand is horribly run down and a bit grotty. The room was tiny, the bed bumpy yet I had a fantastic night's sleep. The whole place feels like the management simply doesn't care and yet the two staff I interacted with gave excellent customer service. None of it adds up.
I have to say, when I arrived, my heart sank. The room was like a glorified cupboard with paint peeling off the walls, a shabby carpet and a shower room that smelt like something had died in there. As I went down the stairs to move my car, after checking in (there's no car park on site, but one opposite - unless you are there for a Thursday when it's market day, in which case you have to park in another spot, two minutes walk away) one of the bannister rails fell out and crashed down to the floor below. The place needs some serious maintenance!
Once I was in bed though (having held my breath long enough to use the shower-with-sink-and-toilet hovel), I drifted into a blissful night's sleep. I am something of an insomniac at the moment, so this was a minor miracle!
At breakfast I was greeted by a sullen women, who grunted and seemed most unfriendly, but she was soon shooed back into the kitchen and a courteous and polite young fellow took my order. The food was well cooked and presented with care. Coffee was real and well-brewed. There was plenty on offer. Lovely! That said, the breakfast room, like much of the rest of the place felt municipal and tatty.
So all in all, a decidedly unloved and neglected gem that unexpectedly rises to the challenge of being a hotel on several occasions. Reading between the lines, I suspect the hotel is owned and managed by someone who cares little for their guests, and has no interest in investing in the place, but either by luck or judgement, has hired one or two excellent staff, who manage to charm some goodwill back into those staying over and prevent everyone from complaining about just how awful it potentially could be.
I am aware I had a reasonable experience, but can see very clearly how other reviewers here may well have had a nightmare. It is very, very tatty. Let's hope it changes owners soon!
Room Tip: I stayed in 22 - it was tiny and the shower room smelt dank. Quiet though and bed ok.
