“Excellent, but....”

It is a good job I did not turn on my heel and walk out after being totally ignored by the receptionist - I couldn't actually believe it was happening: she was on the phone, obviously to a friend, I got a cursory glance then ignored! I waited.....and waited.....and was just about to go when luckily another member of staff appeared and checked me in. And the receptionist continued on the phone! However, this proved a delightful hotel with friendly, helpful staff throughout (except the forementioned!), good quality food and a comfortable, modern, superbly clean bedroom and bathroom. I give it an 'excellent' rating throughout, deliberately overlooking the gross failure of reception.

Stayed at this hotel for two nights recently.....room was ideal and had everthing required, very clean...Food was very good with more than ample proportions for everyone.
Staff were all very helpful and friendly and when sitting in reception area waiting for family to arrive we were offered free tea/coffee.
Also has plenty of free secured parking
Would highly recommend

Made to feel very welcome by everyone. Room was first class, very comfortable and spotless.
Bedlinen & towels were lovely and fresh. Had huge tv screen which was a nice surprise and the room was nicely heated.
Loved the free wifi.
Food was freshly prepared, homemade, hot and very generous portions.
Excellent value for money.
Big thank you to the staff for treating us so well & thanks to Gill for her cleaning tips as she does a sterling job! Looking forward to coming back and would not hesitate to recommend the Downshire Arms to anyone wishing to stay in the area

“New Year's Eve”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We dined at The Downshire on New Year's Eve - the busiest night of the year and were not disappointed. On arrival we were met by front of house, welcomed and taken to our table. The staff could not have done enough for us ensuring our night was success, checking several times if we needed anything and we were given as much time as we needed to finish and enjoy (which we did) our meal before the festivities began. The food did not disappoint extremely well cooked and presented with generous portions and a chocolate brownie to die for.......

A local band played and on the stroke of midnight a piper appeared and brought in the new year before the band struck up again.

We had a brilliant night and came away feeling we had brought in the new year with friends and family such was the attentiveness of everyone.

Roll on 31st December 2012!!

“Excellent food - poor staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We arrived at the Downshire on 27/12/11 around 5pm to get something to eat. On arrival, we had been directed to the pub section downstairs, we scanned around looking for a table & ended up sitting at an empty table which hadnt been cleared & cleaned down from the previous diners (this is usually no problem but we had to look at messy plates and dirty glasses for about 10 minutes until someone cleared it.)

After waiting about 10 minutes for a member of staff to come and see if we wanted a drink/menu, i decided to go and ask myself. I asked a young waiter if it was possible if we could have a menu - he couldnt find one. And after watching him ask another member of staff, we finally got a menu - 5 minutes later.

After about ANOTHER 10 minutes, a young blonde girl came to take our order (bear in mind, no one has asked us if we would like a drink yet!) Once she had written down our order, with the poorest spelling of "STEAT" (steak) and "SIRLON" (sirloin) I had to ask her if we could have drinks - she took our drinks order, with enough to do... I felt like I was actually putting her out of her way.

Once our order hit the kitchen our food was out in great time, this was brought to us by a dark haired girl who placed my fillet steak on the table and announced a "minute steak" for my boyfriend, who in actual fact had ordered a sirloin (which was on the plate btw) so she took the sirloin/minute steak back to the kitchen only to bring it back 2 minutes later saying that it WAS a sirloin but she got mixed up by the look of it.

THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT! LOVELY STEAK, COOKED TO PERFECTION! THE CHIPS, ONION RINGS AND PEPPER SAUCE WERE ALL FIRST CLASS!!!

I didnt want to write this review. These are all small faults and im guessing the regular full time staff were off for xmas and these members of staff mentioned are only part time temp staff to help cover over the xmas period but i just wanted to show how young & inexperienced staff members can bring down, what should have been, a fantastic dining experience because the food was fantastic! Yes, nowhere is perfect, but one after the other of silly errors that shouldnt have happened really put a dampner on it all.
