“Wouldn't recommend eating here at all McDonalds would be better!”

In December my husband and his company held their christmas meal at The George and very much enjoyed it, which in turn led us to booking a table for a valentines meal. My husband ordered from the main menu and I ordered Sizzling Sweet Chilli Chicken from the specials menu. Unfortunatley when our meals arrived mine was neither sizzling nor very appetising. I have to say it left me intrigued as to how you cook two breasts of chicken and make them over cooked and still look anaemic. I suspect the over cooking came from the chicken sitting in either a warming drawer or under a heat lamp as the very ends of the chicken were dry and brown. We decided to order pudding and having seen plates of lovely looking apple pie be delivered to other tables I ordered apple pie with custard and my husband ordered the Banoffee Tart. When our desserts turned up it was almost comical as we realised that the custard was Ambrosia custard straight out of a tin ( it has a unique smell all of its own), the pastry was raw and looked like it may have been reheated in a microwave as it was soggy and hotter in the centre than it was anywhere else. My husbands banoffee tart was interesting he's never had toffee sauce that could be lifted from the pie in one peice and hold it's shape. again the pastry was inedible and the bananas were brown. Soldiering on as we so rarely get time away from our family life I ordered a Calypso Coffee it was delivered to the table without sugar and when I asked for some I was told that it was already in the coffee. Turns out it wasn't and eventually I was brought sugar during this time I realised that the Tia Maria was barely there and the coffee was cold! All in all a disppointing meal made more disappointing by the fact that there were staff in the dining room in casual clotihng that clearly wasn't part of the uniform and our waiter seemed to have a limited grasp on english and manners.

“Wear a coat to stay here!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed at the George on friday 27 Jan 2012, one of the coldest days of the year. We were given room18, on arrival at the room it was freezing in there, no heating, this was at approx 4.00pm, on complaining, we were moved, yet again, no heating, and for a third time, same problem, at this point we were informed that Head Office did not allow the heating to be switched on until 5pm!!! What is the point of being able to book in at 2.00 if the heating is off til 5?
On the plus side the breakfast was decent, with a choice of cooked breakfast, but no vege option of 'a full English' most surprising!!

Room Tip: Check for big radiators!!!

I stayed in George Hotel when I was in England in business trip. It's very quiet, old, beautiful and memorable hotel in the centre of Huntingdon. This hotel is classical old english inn.

“OK for a quick lunch and a beer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

Stopped in Huntingdon for a few hours and after a quick tour around, The George looked the most congenial for lunch. Quite imposing as you walk in, the local Rotary club was holding an informal dinner and the place was very busy. Good selection at the bar and we grabbed some beers and sat at a table. The menu is a standard Greene King Gastro Pub one but to be fair has been well thought out and offers something for everyone. There was a two main meals for a £10 deal which we went for. My guest had haddock with chips and peas and I had the cooked ham with eggs and chips. The haddock arrived in a wonderful crisp batter, which my friend said was delicious, and although my slices of ham were on the thin side, It was great value for the price.
One observation I did make about the place was when we arrived at 12.30pm it was full of elderly men and ladies in suits and outfits (the rotary club) being very prim and proper, these had disappeared by 2pm to be replaced by some well known locals possibly workman just finished work who started drinking copious amounts of alcohol and swearing profanities that the remainder of us in the bar could not help hearing! Being men of the world we didn't find this a problem but I think the lady at the table next to us who was having lunch with her grandmother was a liitle embarrassed!
