“Don`t go unless you love camping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2011

The resort is immersed in nature, which could be a good thing if done properly. However, the walkways from the restaurant/beach to the rooms are made of concrete and there is no landscaping whatsoever. Everything is pretty run down, the rooms feel old and have stained, scratched sinks/toilets. Apart from the rooms there is very little public space: a tiny restaurant (quite charming, at the water`s edge), a really depressing, small swimming pool, and the beach. The beach gets very very narrow at high tide, and it is impossible to swim from it (water is too shallow and full of sharp coral). One can go snorkeling from the jetty, which can be fun. Be prepared to live as if you were camping: the service is almost non-existent (in several occasions we could not find ANYBODY to ask about scuba diving, and when we finally located the right scuba person he told us we should have booked a day in advance). Often, at the restaurant and elsewhere, you are temped to just go and do it yourself. You might want to bring your own food: on our first day, the resort was out of fruit (any fruit), out of bacon, ham or sausages. On the second day, they were out of tomatoes, squid, and chicken. On the third day, they were out of potatoes and milk! This makes it very difficult to order your meals. And when the food does come, it is bland at best. If you do bring your own food, be careful where you put it: we found a rat in the room going through our supply of rice crackers. If this is the kind of nature you like, you`ll find plenty of it, including lots of bugs which pestered us (especially our daughter, who still has about a hundred bites on her body—I am not exaggerating).
If you must go to this place because you like the idea of the natural park, make sure you do not pay the full rate, which is incredibly overpriced for what you get. In fact, there are much better options (nicer, more spacious, swimmable beaches, better food, lower price) on the mainland in front of menjangan island, which will still allow you to go snorkeling or diving in the park—it`s just a 20 minute boat ride.

“Wonderful get-a-way with great diving.”

A stay at Waka Shorea starts with a warm greeting at reception and then a short boat ride to the to the resort proper. The secluded atmosphere is restfull and the wild animals ( Black monkeys, Asian pigs, deer, butterflies) provide entertainment.

There's a really nice saltwater pool and tea in the afternoon.

Diving is a major attraction here. The coral walls put you in another world, literally. The water warm and clear.

The staff try to make you feel welcome and succeed.

Food was also very good, nice selection and fresh.

Overall, we had a terrific time & would like to return.

Also, for those with iPads, there's good, free wi fi.

“Nice hotel in very isolated surroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2010

The waka shorea is quite special because it is in national park so it is completely alone in the forest, it is nice but when the hotel is a litlle bit empty (as was our case) and with all the warnings about the surrounding animals it can also get a little bit freaky. We were stunned by the room(s), we had booked a villa and actually had a complex of three buildings all to ourselves: one bungalow for the master bedroom, another with a room for the children and a third open one (no walls) for pic-nic: real luxury! One negative point: the trip to the near island for snorkeling was way overpriced: 40 USD/ head for 3 hours and pic-nic lunch, they quite abuse of the fact that is is cumbersome to go to mainland to book the trip with someone else.

“Mixed experience - Excellent location, but overall way overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2010

The location is great, the only resort within the National park boundaries. This gives you the opportunity of seeing very closely black monkeys, deer, wild pigs... and to free baby turtles that have been raised in the resort.

Overall, our experience is very mixed: sometimes you get the impression you're in a 4-star hotel (great rooms), sometimes in a 1-star (very dirty windows). In any case, everything at Waka Shorea is priced like in a 4+ star hotel and since you are in the middle of nowhere, you have no alternative. Snorkeling? 35 USD/person. Diving? 100+ USD/person. Walking in the national park (a guide is mandatory), 30+ USD/person etc. For those who don't know prices in Indonesia, that's 2 to 4 times too expensive.

Food is good (not more), dining almost on the beach is a great experience, and the "normal" pricing is surprisingly reasonable compared to the rest. However, on our final day, we were flatly told that since the resort was full, they decided not to offer the full menu, but to impose a buffet to all guests, priced at USD 24/person (again, by Indonesian standards, that's 2 times too high). First time I saw a "luxury" hotel reducing the choice of customers just because it is fully booked!
