“Okay for 1 night stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We were a group of adults travelling around Cornwall for leisure and stayed here for 1 night. The location is fine and the rooms are okay. The shower knobs are broken and there is no warm water available only lukewarm. The breakfast is okay, unlimited but oily. All in all, the stay was fine and suited our budget. There is scope for improvement though.

Room Tip: Don't expect a lot, is okay for nominal budget.

“Very pleasant, well worth the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2011

We stayed for one night and found the hotel very pleasant. At the price they are charging one gets many additional features not usually found at this level such as the bar, room service, jacuzzi and sauna and sundries for sale etc. Although the hotel structure may be a little dated, the decor is very clean and appropriate for this date/style of house. We booked at the last minute and were told that a small en-suite was available. It was small, but perfectly adaquate for our nights stay. The en-suite shower room was spotless and everything worked perfectly. Breakfast was plentifull and service excellent throughout. In response to some of the negative comments on here, I would say don't expect £150.00 per night luxury when you are trying to save a few pounds. Very good.

“Excellent value for money”

I recently spent an extended weekend at the hotel and found it a most enjoyable experience. My room was spotless, the bed very comfortable, the service excellent, the staff most obliging and the food very good value for money.

I think anyone would be hard pushed to find better !!

“Functional rather than luxurious”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2010

My husband and I stayed here for one night while visiting family in Truro. We paid £68.50/night (including breakfast) for a double en suite room.

The Carlton Hotel is a traditional small-town hotel. As other reviewers noted, the hotel's decor was a little dated but really nothing that would stop me staying here. In a way, it's quite charming in a retro kind of way (although admittedly if I had been looking for a romantic getaway rather than visiting family I might have thought otherwise!).

Our room was a reasonable size, clean and comfortable. We were more than happy with it for a one night stay, even though it was more functional than luxurious.

I noticed that other reviewers here commented on carpets in the bathroom -- I'm not sure whether this is the case now throughout the hotel, but our bathroom did not have a carpet. It had some kind of lino-like covering (rather than the tiles or similar you'd find in more luxurious hotels...like I said, quite functional). We had a shower cubicle in our bathroom (ie no bath tub) -- I noticed one reviewer said they only had a bath so if you prefer a shower there are such rooms available to request.

Breakfast included both a cold buffet (cereal, fruit, yoghurt) and a choice of made-to-order hot items (basically a full English or any items from it eg I had scrambled eggs on toast), plus tea, coffee and juice. (It was only served from 8.30am-9.30am though which we didn't think was very long -- although it was a Sunday so perhaps there is a bigger window on week days.)

As well as the breakfast room, there was a bar and lounge for guest use. Wi-fi was available in the guest lounge (although not in the bedrooms). I believe there was also a spa-bath/sauna leisure facility although we didn't have a chance to try this. The hotel also has its own car park.

The staff were friendly and helpful. We actually arrived on the overnight sleeper train from London so arrived at the hotel about 7.30am -- as our room was ready they let us check in then which was very helpful.

The hotel is walking distance from Truro town centre but note that this is up a hill. Truro itself is a pleasant enough town but there's not loads to do there -- it's reasonably easy to get to places like Falmouth and St Ives though.

Overall, I would stay here again, especially as there doesn't seem to be a large choice of hotels and B&Bs in Truro. Perhaps this shortage contributes to the prices, as I did think nearly £70 per night was a little expensive for what it was. It it had been £10 less I would probably have given it four rather than three stars.

“Traditional, Friendly family run hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2010

Stayed with my wife and two teenage sons for 4 nights 21st Aug, booked two rooms but was offered two singles for the Kids which they loved (all three rooms were close together). Very friendly and great service, the food was much better than I would expect and silver service, nice touch. The location is great for exploring Cornwall as you can get to both coasts easily. I strongly recommend Holywell Bay - Spectacular!
