Before arriving here I stay at the Raddison SAS Lyon located at Part Dieu, the rate was similar but there was no comparison in room facilities, cleanliness, views and staff helpfulness. It is also very close to the Part Dieu TGV station and shopping centre. The Raddison wins hands down, the only reason I switch to the Mercure was that the place I had to travel to each day was more conveniently reach by Metro from Charpennes then Part Dieu.
I stayed at the Mercure twice over a 2 week period.
First stay I was provided a room which was not compatible with a laptop dial-up modem to check emails which is a necessity for any business traveller. They were quick to provide phone to my room which allowed for dial-up access. Room was ok, but shower partition was not well sealed and the bathroom floor ended up with about 1cm of water no matter how carefull I was.
Second stay was terrible. Was told to take a smoking room even though non-smoking were available. I was told there is no smell of smoke even though I will be on a smoking level - you guess it, of course it smells like smoke.
Front desk lady was hesistant and unwilling to help, but eventually gave me a room on a non-smoking level. Her evil stares and lack of customer service was a disgrace. (Note: All other front desk hosts were great)
Once again problem with the phone, they lady said I cannot be provided with a modem compatible phone and that I MUST stay in a smoking room to have this facility. After spending several minutes on the phone she provided a phone.
THEN, the air conditioning in this room did not work, ok no big deal in Lyon during September right? Wrong, with the windows open even at 2am in the morning the motorbikes and Kids congregrating outside the McDonalds across the road were far too noisy and the heat was building up.
I called reception at 2:30am, this time the front desk guy (must of been the manager) offered me another room on the non-street side of the hotel and hadled alll my transfers and key exchanges. Even though this took till about 3am to finalise, at least I could get in 4 hours sleep before going to work!
A few days later when it was absolutely pouring with rain, I was running across the road from the train station eager to get inside the hotel. The doors were locked! You cannot use your room key to open the door, the front desk lady controls it. I press and pressed the intercom, knocked on the door, walk to the window outside reception and tried to get someones attention. I was stuck outside for 15minutes before the front desk lady comes back from a break and opens the door! By that time there were 5 of us very unhappy guests drenched trudging throught the lobby waiting another 5mins for the elevator.
Overall, the hotel is best for its location. There are nice restarants located in close proximity. But if you want to have a stress free stay, I would recommend the Radisson SAS if you can get a good deal.
