While on holiday in Avoriaz recently with my wife and kids we decided to have a look at the Hotel des Dromonts as a possible venue for next year. We went in the early evening (6.30ish) for a drink in the bar and to ask whether we could look at a room. Firstly, it was very tatty outside, with cheap, non-matching plastic chairs on the terrace. The main door to the hotel was locked and there was no sign of life inside, but we found a side door by the bar open and went in. There was one other group in the bar area but no staff. We found a seat and after 5 minutes a barman wandered in. After another few minutes he noticed us and brought bar menus. The prices were high but not out of kilter for the very best mountain hotels. We ordered two vodka tonics and a jug of tap water. We were brought two of the most revolting vodka tonics I have ever tasted - cheap vodka (Arnoloff, it turned out), cheap warm tonic, one small ice cube and a couple of mashed up dry slices of lemon, one of which fell out of the glass onto the table as the drink was served and left there by the barman - and a half litre bottle of Evian. We paid E14 per vodka and E8 for the Evian. As I said before, over the top prices for a normal bar but in line with 5 star hotel prices. Unfortunately this was not 5 star quality of drink or service. We were offered no complimentary nuts or nibbles, as would be a matter of course in a top hotel. The barman took no further interest in our wellbeing and we had to go and find a member of staff when we wanted to pay and leave.
I cannot comment on the rooms or the quality of stay at this hotel, but on the basis of the drink we decided it was a waste of time to even consider looking at a room or staying here in the future.
