“Basic but bearable.”

I travelled with a friend and we had a decent enough time, although the accommodation was not one of the highlights. Avoriaz is a very picturesque little place but these apartments are some of the most basic you'll find.

On the plus side it is very centrally located for shops, supermarket, bars and getting to the lifts. It was also clean and warm, which given it averaged -10 during our stay was most welcome.

On the negative side the sofa-come-beds (not sofa beds in the conventional sense) were not very comfortable, the "kitchenette" very cramped and space pretty tight overall. We had a studio without a balcony, which was probably the cheapest option. Reception was also very slow checking us in, with all the usual pleasantries you come to expect, being as absent as in most French hotels.

Take some ear plugs with you if you want a decent night's sleep because you'll be kept awake by neighbours or revellers making their way home outside well into the early hours.

Also take a towel because they're not included and I think it was EUR20 if you wanted to "borrow" one.

Overall, it did the job, but I wouldn't stay again unless I was after a real bargain and this place was offering a serious deal!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review of your stay in Avoriaz. We are glad to hear that you found the apartments clean and tidy but we are sorry to hear you were disappointed with the size of your accommodation. Our website and brochure both outline room dimensions, sizes, furnishings and equipment available. They also list the additional costs for "bolt on" extras such as towels, cleaning kits, parking etc. We are equally sorry to hear about check in experience. Our staff are trained to the highest level of customer service so we can only apologise that on this instance it fell below our usual high standards. In regards to the noise disruption, we have a "no noise after 10pm" policy at our residences but regret that there can still be disturbances caused by noise outside the ski resort. We have logged your review and passed your feedback on to head office and our management teams. We are committed to improving our standard of accommodation whenever we can therefore your feedback is very helpful.

we arrived in avoriaz and we had a horse sleigh to the acccom which was very cute, we arrived at checkin and it was an ok check in nothing exciting,

the location of the hotel was great couldnt of asked for better i loved the local bakery for breakfast and there is supermarkets across the way and to the left round the corner plus there is loads of resturants and takeout places close by.

the rooms well it felt more like a small prison cell and i couldnt believe the beds...it was the most uncomfy bed ever god knows how people can sleep on them for a week!! god i was tired!! the so called little thin sofa what u had as a bed was hard and u had a little pillow and sheets and a blanket they dont do double beds!!.....not impressed!!! no english TV programs just BBC world news for a whole week!!! plus the handset didnt work. good job we took our laptops with films on, The kitchen was good loads of cutlery, microwave, fridge and hob, the bathroom was ok too it was all very clean too, you also have to make sure the room is clean before you check out too.....

overall i would stay in avoriaz again but defo somewhere else i hated!!! that room!!! i would rather pay extra for a better hotel.

“Cheap & Cheerful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2009

We stayed for a week and really loved Avoriaz. The weather was mixed and a couple of days we could not venture out. The 2 days when the sun shone were really great and we ventured over on to the Swiss side and had a great time.

Our impressions of the Portes du Soleil were good at the outset, reception told us that they had no studios left & we were being upgraded to a 6 person room. The room itself was fine. Plenty of space for just the 2 of us. However we had internal noise from late night revellers coming back and waking us up AND external noise as the room fronted on the main street where revellers shouted and bawled sometimes till 5 in the morning.

I am 58 and probably should have known what I might get for the price. If there is a next time I would pay more and have some peace at night. Why do skiers behave so abominably?

“Brilliant Ski Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2009

Travelled to Avoriaz for a week's skiing between 17th and 24th Jan 2009. We booked through Thomson. We had been looking forward to the for months and after an almost snow-free trip to Andorra in 2008, we were blown away by Avoriaz.

We arrived in resort after an early flight at 1pm. Thomson have no Rep in Avoriaz, so we dealt with Reps from their sister company Crystal Ski. Our bags were unloaded from the coach and transferred directly to our relevant apartment blocks/chalets, however we could not check-in until 5pm. No problem, we explored, had some lunch and sorted out our equipment hire which we'd pre-booked.

The Portes du Soleil offer an equipment store room with lockable cupboards, and although we had no problems, it did not appear the most secure. There were notices stating that management do allow guests to keep equipment in their rooms if they wish to.

We signed up to the 'Comfort+' option which ensures beds are made-up on arrival, towels provided, a cleaning kit is provided and a TV is available. At £20 per person, this was probably an unnecessary extra (cleaning kit consisted of two tiny bottles of detergent and a wash cloth) and we only used the TV to catch up on the news (BBC World Service only English channel).

Kitchen comprised a hob, fridge, sink and coffee maker, however there was no kettle and no decent sized cups for Tea lovers. Also, the inventory list provided did not accurately reflect the contents of the cupboards.

There were 2 bathrooms in this apartment, both had baths with shower attachments, but no bracket or shower curtain to allow a comfortable shower. In one bathroom, the toilet seat and heater were broken, but the reception staff just noted the problems rather than send anyone to fix them.

The Portes du Soleil is sited right in the middle of town, on the main street. We were able to ski to and from our door all week which was great. There are several bars and restaurants within a 30s walk, and we had no problems with excess noise as I have seen reported elsewhere. We were probably making it actually.

This accommodation is basic, but knows it and doesn't try to be anything else. As a base for a young (ish) group that want to do plenty of skiing during the day, partying in the evening, and crashing at night it's fine. I'd definitely come back to Avoriaz in the future, but would probably try a chalet instead.
