“Un-Policed Resort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Stayed 4th - 11th Feb on 9th floor, front. Check in took ages but staff were pleasant. I got a free kettle when I asked as I was one of the first. Room big enough for two - long bunk beds plus a pullout under the sofa - I'm 6'3" and bunk was fine.
VERY noisy resort at night with French youth a perfect match for the very worst of our own English yobs - shouting and screaming up to 5 a.m. NEVER saw a police officer, which is what Avoriaz desparately needs.
Restaurants a bit pricey and food avaerage at best (on the slopes as well - burger city), beer 5 euro r more a pint.
Lots of good blue and red runs in the local area - only went into the wider Portes Du Soleil piste area twice.

Room Tip: Go high and tghink about requesting a rear facing room.

“what a hovel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Just got back from a week in avoriaz staying at the portes du soleil, the resort is beautiful and we had a fantastic time only problem was the accomadation, dirty pillows, no storage, electric wires bare, small, beds that could barely support a child you could feel every slat under the wafer thin piece off foam, dark, as for sleeping 6 there was 4 off us and that was tight also very little storage, if you have ever had the misfortune of staying at a F1 hotel this place is worse. you also have to make your own beds, pay for towels and rent a kettle and at the end of your stay clean and hoover the place, this place is a dump and needs to be brought into the 21st century.

Room Tip: DONT go here, DONT waste your money

“BUDGET HOTEL. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

The hotel has a central location in great resort which has apparently caused others to be disturbed by noise from the street etc, however, we requested a high floor at the back of the hotel so had no such complaint. The same however could not be said for noise which came from partying next door rooms at 3am.

From our experience the hotel appeared to be clean and warm.

Checkin is a complete nightmare with staff taking a minimum of 15 minutes to book in each party and at the of our checkin there were probably about 30 parties waiting and only 3 staff.

There were no beds as such just singe sofa beds (in the 2 person apartments at least). We got around this by pulling the foam matresses onto the floor in the evening to make a double bed.

Limited self catering facilities. The kitchen includes 2 hobs, microwave, and a sink. A toaster can be requested free of charge for the week you just have to request it at check in. Limited selection of utensils and cutlery. We ended up drinking tea from bowls as the mugs provided are not much larger than espresso cups.

Decor leaves a little to be desired especially the orange bathroom, but at the end of the day your getting what you pay for. Beware that we found hot water often ran out by 8pm and there are no shower facilities ie. curtain or shower attachment so be prepared to either sit and shower or bath for the week which we found to be quite relaxing after a days skiing (plenty of hot water prior to 7-8pm).

Many reviews say there are no English channels on the Tv, however, we had BBC 1 and, BBC news and CNN.

In summary, the clues in the title, this is a budget hotel so your a fool if you book expecting more than than that. Having said that the checkin pocess, hot water and cooking utensil issues need to be looked into and addresed. The hotel is however in a great location and overall we had a great week.

Room Tip: For a good nights sleep request a high floor at the back of the hotel.

“Extremely noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

The positives first
In the centre of the village with easy access to the pistes.
Clean

The negatives-
Chaotic & inefficient check-in. There were queues of people, piles of luggage and staff going serving about three people at a time (slowly).
Reception only staffed at weekends.
Extremely noisy from piste-bashers & people inside and outside the building- even at 5am. Take ear-plugs if you occasionally like to sleep whilst on holiday!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!!

“Noisey and uncomfortable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Check in is staggeringly slow and inefficient, polite enough but spoke very little english. Linen for bedding given to you at reception but if you want a towel it costs an extra 20euros so take your own. The facilities in the room have a lot to be desired! Two small hobs, microwave and a fridge, you dont even get a kettle!!!! When we asked for one at reception they said they didnt have any left, this made cooking and making tea for the week very difficult. The room itself is small, even for an intermate couple so i wouldnt like to share it with a 3rd person especially if you bring your own gear. You get the pleasure of sleeping... or should i say trying to sleep on "sofa beds" but they are nothing more than a thin piece of foam supplemented with one very thin pillow, very uncomfortable! The walls were paper thin and we were awoken one night by a couple arguing at 0500. We were right by the corridor doors and whenever someone came through them the whole wall wobbled. The bathroom was very basic and there wasnt even a wall mount or curtain for the shower so you cant have a propper shower which becomes very irritating and tiresome by the end of the week. The TV had no english speaking channels so take your own entertainment. You are also expected to clean your own rooms ready for the next guests and if its not good enough you get charged a cleaning fee!
Avoriaz is ment to be a traffic free resort, however piste bashers, snow mobiles, horse and carrages along with other vehicles trundle through the resort at all hours making this a very noisey. Take ear plugs! It also makes getting your luggage to and from the hotel a trial in itself. They have to be loaded from the bus outside the resort onto a seperate vehicle which then dumps them outside the hotel doors some hours later.
With regards to the resort, the mountain and snow conditions were excellent. However the resort had plenty of restaurants if you dont mind spending a small fortune! There is very little in the way of nightlife, we only found one bar above the pharmacy that was worth visiting which had a live band on from 10pm although they were quite bad it had a decent atmophere!
Hotel sutible for a weekend stay but a full week is simply too long!
