As the price for our suite was not inexpensive (540 euros), I had higher expectations than what we received. I simply found this substantially overpriced for what the hotel offers.
We arrived and were advised to back our car towards the side of the hotel in order to ease the delivery of our luggage into our room. I found that an odd request. Presumably they can carry the luggage a bit further to the room rather than making me navigate between a large tree and a building in order to get closer to the room. I was then asked whether we wished help with our luggage - which I then better understood why I was asked to get the car closer to the room. Considering that we had to go up a narrow steep staircase to get to our room (the rooms for the suite were on the second and third floor) that was a surprising question as we had four large suitcases and I had no intention of carrying them up to the room. When I said that we would need assistance and requested that a bellman be sent, the girl from the front desk said that she, in fact, would carry the bags. I actually felt awkward about this as the bags were quite large and even I found them quite heavy to carry, let alone to take up two flights of stairs. To her credit she managed to lug them up.
Our room had air conditioning but it barely worked which resulted in a very hot and uncomfortable room (it was approximately 90 or so outside which was not surprising as it was mid August). I raised this problem with the hotel (specifically as this was emphasized when we made our reservation that the rooms had to be air conditioned) and they noted that there was air conditioning - but unfortunately it had no impact on the temperature of the room as it was barely working (the lack of emission of cool air from the unit was a hint that it was of limited use). They appeared to recognize this problem and we were advised the next morning (after I informed them that it was so uncomfortable the previous evening) that they were going to have a technician come at 3pm to attend to the problem.
The room itself was average and quite dark. The bathroom had a shower with little water pressure and a cracked mirror on the vanity. Certainly the room was not conducive to wanting to be inside (regardless of the temperature) Again, I expected better.
The pool area had no attendant to provide towels and the water in the pool was littered with sufficient leaves and foliage (and oddly enough a few wasps) that our kids elected to not go swimming. Considering how hot it was, their choice spoke volumes. I realize that the hotel is small so one can expect less staff but, again, for the price of the room one can reasonably expect some one to be attending at the pool.
We subsequently moved on our Provence trip to a resort in Tourettes (the Four Seasons). While we paid more for that room (900 euros), we received so much more from the hotel that it made our stay at Les Frenes appear to have that much less value.
The limited staff that we encountered were nice enough so I had no issues from that perspective. That being said, there did not appear to be much staff around.
Obviously others that have stayed have enjoyed this hotel. We did not have the same view.
