“Lovely, quiet colonial-like hotel 10 minutes from Avignon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

The rooms were clean, the service and staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. The back terrace, yard and pool are lovely. If you want to avoid the higher prices of staying inside the walls of Avignon, this is a great place as long as you don't care about not being able to walk around Avignon directly from your hotel. We also stayed in Hotel d'Europe in Avignon (inside the City walls) for one night of our trip and loved it. However, a night and day in Avignon was enough and it was nice to relax and eat at Les Frenes the next time we were in town.

Room Tip: The standard room was fine. Don't pay for a suite unless you really care about having the stand...

“Lovely location, sweet staff but mediocre food, and dilapidated furnishings.”

This is a convenient peaceful spot, with shady garden in which one can rest after hectic Avignon traffic. The hotel is in a beautiful period building and our room was spacious. Breakfast in the garden charming. However the furnishings are dirty and old - eg sunlounger cushions and the large pool had loose light fittings. A make-over is years overdue. Dinner expensive with inferior ingredients.Well-presented but very oversalted. Sorry to say this, as staff really tried hard, but quite honestly you should try somewhere else.

“Not What I expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2011

As the price for our suite was not inexpensive (540 euros), I had higher expectations than what we received. I simply found this substantially overpriced for what the hotel offers.

We arrived and were advised to back our car towards the side of the hotel in order to ease the delivery of our luggage into our room. I found that an odd request. Presumably they can carry the luggage a bit further to the room rather than making me navigate between a large tree and a building in order to get closer to the room. I was then asked whether we wished help with our luggage - which I then better understood why I was asked to get the car closer to the room. Considering that we had to go up a narrow steep staircase to get to our room (the rooms for the suite were on the second and third floor) that was a surprising question as we had four large suitcases and I had no intention of carrying them up to the room. When I said that we would need assistance and requested that a bellman be sent, the girl from the front desk said that she, in fact, would carry the bags. I actually felt awkward about this as the bags were quite large and even I found them quite heavy to carry, let alone to take up two flights of stairs. To her credit she managed to lug them up.

Our room had air conditioning but it barely worked which resulted in a very hot and uncomfortable room (it was approximately 90 or so outside which was not surprising as it was mid August). I raised this problem with the hotel (specifically as this was emphasized when we made our reservation that the rooms had to be air conditioned) and they noted that there was air conditioning - but unfortunately it had no impact on the temperature of the room as it was barely working (the lack of emission of cool air from the unit was a hint that it was of limited use). They appeared to recognize this problem and we were advised the next morning (after I informed them that it was so uncomfortable the previous evening) that they were going to have a technician come at 3pm to attend to the problem.

The room itself was average and quite dark. The bathroom had a shower with little water pressure and a cracked mirror on the vanity. Certainly the room was not conducive to wanting to be inside (regardless of the temperature) Again, I expected better.

The pool area had no attendant to provide towels and the water in the pool was littered with sufficient leaves and foliage (and oddly enough a few wasps) that our kids elected to not go swimming. Considering how hot it was, their choice spoke volumes. I realize that the hotel is small so one can expect less staff but, again, for the price of the room one can reasonably expect some one to be attending at the pool.

We subsequently moved on our Provence trip to a resort in Tourettes (the Four Seasons). While we paid more for that room (900 euros), we received so much more from the hotel that it made our stay at Les Frenes appear to have that much less value.

The limited staff that we encountered were nice enough so I had no issues from that perspective. That being said, there did not appear to be much staff around.

Obviously others that have stayed have enjoyed this hotel. We did not have the same view.

“Wonderful hotel. Would recommend it to everyone.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

My friend and I stayed here recently and chose this hotel due to its proximity to Avignon without being in Avignon. It was perfectly located to see the smaller towns in the area without dealing with the traffic of a bigger city. The hotel and the grounds are immaculate and gorgeous. We were really looking forward to spending some time by the pool but it rained during our stay. The only disappointment was that the hot tub was broken when we were there. The restaurant is superb, but a little pricey. Service was impeccable and the staff was so friendly and helpful. This was a splurge hotel for us, but well worth it. Our room was huge and the jacuzzi bathtub was awsome. I would stay here again and probably will someday. I highly recommend it to anyone.

“Truly Exquisite!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2011

I travelled through Eurostar with my husband and two of our friends to this wonderful hotel. We hired a car from the train station and found the hotel very easily (there are many signs for the hotel throughout Montfavet) and when we arrived, we were both given amazing rooms in the main villa. Our rooms were very "Marie Antoinette" in style - truly Parisian chic! Beautiful furniture, huge bed and luxurious bathroom which was perfect after a day of sightseeing. As we went in what they call low season (even though the temperature regularly reached 28 degrees!) the pool was not open and was being cleaned instead. That was a shame but we were still able to take our books and sit on the sun loungers anyway.
The service was impeccible here and we did try and speak as much in French that we knew but they never once made us feel bad for this-thank you! We also read in one of the books that are in the hallways that the restaurant is (or at least was) Michelin starred which explained the gorgeous food. The only slight was the price of the breakfast which due to the poor exchange rate meant that we would have had to have paid £20 each (or £80 a day) for breakfast which was too steep for us as breakfast was not included but we were never obliged to take breakfast and instead went to the lovely boulangerie just 2 minutes to the right of the hotel exit instead.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you stay in Provence - will definitely come back again in high season to enjoy the pool.
