Dear all,
My husband and I visited the restaurant at the Castel Beau site the day after our wedding in Brittany last month.
We arrived with our parents and my husband's brother had decided to join us at the last minute so we asked if we could put his table and ours together. The restaurant was practically empty (just one other table of guests) so the staff were not busy and we thought this would not be an issue. We were told rather abruptly that if we wanted 2 tables together we should have asked when we made the booking over the phone.
We were not too impressed by the frosty welcome but still we stayed and asked if it was at least possible for the two tables to be next to one another and our request was granted, somewhat relunctantly.
The next obstacle was children. As we had four children with us, we asked if there was a children's menu and we were told no there was no children's menu at lunch time so I asked if it was possible to have some food for the children, for instance pasta and, although the waiter initially said yes, he then came back and said that no there was no pasta so maybe they could do mashed potatoes. As it was the only option offered to us, we said that would be fine.
Anyway, we all had our lunch which was nice without being out of this world and then we finished our bill and, after waiting for someone to come to our table for an hour, I eventually grabbed the attention of a member of staff walking past and told him we'd been waiting a long time for the bill so could someone bring it to us. He told me in a very rude and patronising way that if I knew anything about the hotel industry (which I do as I have worked in a hotel myself), I would know that the bar area was separate from the restaurant area and that therefore the bill was nothing to do with him. Still, he disappeared off to the reception area and came back a few minutes later, walked straight past our table and on the way past told us that nobody at reception knew anything about our bill anyway so we might as well leave and not bother paying!
That really was the last straw for us so we left, as instructed by the waiter. We were discussing the whole incident with the rest of the family on the beach outside the hotel when the hotel Manager came after us, shortly followed by that waiter and the hotel Director all insisting that we pay our bill. The waiter claimed he'd asked us to pay our bill which of course was the complete opposite of what he had told us (there could not have been any chance of misunderstanding as I am French myself)! Anyway, not only did the Manager nor the Director not apologise for the waiter's attitude or acknowledge the reason why we had walked out of their establishment, they actually threatened to call their lawyer and the police.
As we felt we had done nothing wrong, we told them we had no issue discussing this matter with the local police.
The police arrived and the waiter lied to them and as did the hotel Director who claimed the bill was ready and we had just tried to walk out without paying.
The hotel Director is very arrogant and his barman was beyond rude with extremely agressive body language so the whole episode was not pleasant.
My husband eventually agreed to pay the bill but needless to say we will never set foot in this place again.
The view from the restaurant is fantastic but not worth the aggravation!!!
Please stay well away.
