“Good food accommodation over priced and over rated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We spent 2 nights in The Talbot Earlier this month as we were attending a function close by .
There was a pleasant welcome, but our room was very small, more suited as a single, only one bedside locker and little room to move around. Bathroom on the other hand was quite large.
The bed was poor other furnishings were adequate. Our biggest gripe was that during our stay the fire alarm went off 5 times[ though the Landlady claimed 4,but was 5 confirmed by another resident ] And this took place on our first night at about 7/7.30am and occurred 2 further times between this and 8.45am. Our hosts did not see fit to say they were sorry just mentioned it as a passing nod! the following morning after a late night at our function as were 6 other Guests, our fire alarm went off at 5.15/5.30am, did not even get a nod this time !!
When paying I suggested after 2 nights I felt some allowance should be made and only with persistence and a cold scowl I got an 8% discount on a£270 bill!! Even at that the rate was £5/10 more than was quoted .
Now while accommodation was disappointing we had dinner there one evening and found it very relaxed and the food was very good nicely presented and freshly cooked.Breakfasts very good also.
So eat there do not stay there.

Room Tip: Rooms tend to get noise avoid rooms at back we heard2 other guests complaining about noise of motors...

“Birthday lunch but not good enough!”

We decided to go to The Talbot as we thought it would be a bit special. It is a pleasant pub and the bar staff were polite and welcoming. We ordered two crab and prawn salads and a portion of chips. We were brought a glass of this salad and queried that it was a main course as it looked like a starter. We were reassured that it was main size but the new(?) waitress went to check. The chef said he hadn't seen that she had written main and put a bit more on top. My husband wanted to leave but we had drinks to finish and I thought there might be more crab etc. It was bland and NOT what we would consider a main course. If we hadn't ordered chips we would have been hungry. Our mood was dismal by then and we just wanted to leave when we should have been celebrating my husband's birthday. We offered to pay for a starter but, to their credit, we were not charged for the food. The management of the pub need to review some food items. They serve good quality meat from a local butcher which one would expect to pay a bit more for BUT some items like Risotto £16 and our salads for £11 seem very overpriced for a pub especially if they don't come with any chips/potatoes/bread etc. .

“Balls-up in Blandford”

Pretty village, with windows proudly displaying Michelin and Alastair Sawday stickers, two starving out-of-towners wooed. Decor's pleasant enough, if a little bland, and the dining room's empty but it's early and the menu looks good: pea and mint risotto, lamb shoulder and sweetbreads, confit of duck. 'I've smuggled you some bread from the kitchen," the waitress - who's lovely, no complaints there - says. "We used to offer it for free but we don't any more." Hmm. Still, here comes the food. Uh-oh. A mass of sticky green starch, purporting to be risotto, minus the pea shoots - "We're out of those, sorry" - accompanied by some disconcertingly browning carrots and overcooked green beans. My lamb - at £15 - makes me want to cry. It's been inexplicably shredded, packed into a little pattie and comes with a grim underside of charcoal that definitely wasn't on the menu. Apparently this place, which seems so perfectly placed to deliver, has lost its chef. It certainly shows.
